SMILES

edit

I was converting Image:1-tetradecanol-Line-Structure.png to SVG when and noticed that the current SMILES string generates a slightly differently looking model (including showing only O instead of HO at the far left) when rendered with BKchem. Is this a problem with BKchem, a different interpretation by BKchem, or possibly an error in the SMILES data?

The SMILES data should be correct - SMILES assumes that the right number of hydrogen atoms in a structure is implicit e.g. water is simply encoded as O. It sounds like BKchem isn't properly attaching the H to the O in the final molecule. There's a great java-based web editor for molecules that usually translates SMILES to line models or the reverse. As soon as I can find it I'll link it. dil 22:31, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
