Grammatical adjustment

The sentence "They also requested the Australian Government for support" is not a grammatical construct that is used in Australian English (the version of English used for this article). Perhaps the phrase "They have also made a request to the Australian Government for assistance in restoring order" may work better in conveying the same understanding.
