Talk:Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social media

WikiProject COVID-19 aims to add to and build consensus for pages relating to COVID-19. They have so far discussed items listed below. Please discuss proposed improvements to them at the project talk page.

General

  1. Superseded by TfD October 2020 and later practice - consult regular {{Current}} guidance.
  2. Refrain from using Worldometer (worldometers.info) as a source due to common errors being observed as noted on the Case Count Task Force common errors page. (April 2020, April 2020)
  3. For infoboxes on the main articles of countries, use Wuhan, Hubei, China for the origin parameter. (March 2020)
  4. "Social distancing" is generally preferred over "physical distancing". (April 2020, May 2020)

Page title

  1. COVID-19 (full caps) is preferable in the body of all articles, and in the title of all articles/category pages/etc.(RM April 2020, including the main article itself, RM March 2021).
  2. SARS-CoV-2 (exact capitalisation and punctuation) is the common name of the virus and should be used for the main article's title, as well as in the body of all articles, and in the title of all other articles/category pages/etc. (June 2022, overturning April 2020)

Map

  1. There is no consensus about which color schemes to use, but they should be consistent within articles as much as possible. There is agreement that there should be six levels of shading, plus gray   for areas with no instances or no data. (May 2020)
  2. There is no consensus about whether the legend, the date, and other elements should appear in the map image itself. (May 2020)
  3. For map legends, ranges should use fixed round numbers (as opposed to updating dynamically). There is no consensus on what base population to use for per capita maps. (May 2020)

@Reywas92: I've reverted your redirect. There's plenty of coverage, just Google "coronavirus + social media". ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:13, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

This is beyond dumb, these links are pointless. Wikipedia is not Know Your Meme or a compilation of trending hashtags. What’s encyclopedic about “The funniest coronavirus jokes” and wash your hands songs? Reywas92Talk 16:35, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Reywas92, Come on, please don't reduce all the coverage I've added to this talk page and the article so far to jokes and hand-washing songs. There's some serious coverage here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:53, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
There's Misinformation related to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic that can cover what Facebook is doing about misinformation and Russia's conspiracies. I do think something could come of this news, but it doesn't necessarily have to be in this article in this way, and we should not be compiling random hashtags and memes. Other websites may share their favorite jokes, memes, and clickbait, but that doesn't mean we need to anthologize them. I don't see the difference between this and linking everyone's favorite political memes in 2020 United States presidential election on social media, and saying #GoBears trended in 2019 NFL season on social media. Reywas92Talk 17:02, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Better title for this page?

Alternatives? I started this page based on Donald Trump on social media, but acknowledge Trump uses social media, whereas the pandemic does not. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:15, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hashtags

edit

I'm not going to go back and forth with this editor, but I'm curious what other editors think about Wikipedia's coverage of trending hashtags related to the pandemic on social media. I'd like to see more content added, not removed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:54, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Online Counseling Service

edit

Great job on explaining how COVID-19 have increased in counseling services for mental health. However, could you include some mental health counseling hotlines like their phone numbers? Or include data of how this service has increased before and during COVID? The sources in the bibliography sections are all really reliable sources. Great job on remaining neutral and listing an organized table of content for the readers. Interesting points on how COVID is affecting people due to shelter in place protocols for health reasons. Another potential thing to be fixed is headline "Spreading information" could be replaced with "Increased in media outreach" to make it more formal. Other than that, well written examples of how this pandemic increased in screen time and tech usage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yenxle (talkcontribs) 00:51, 14 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Increase in Usage

edit

Hello, I have added this section to explain how social media has seen a sharp increase in usage in terms of messaging/video call services, online mental health services, and entertainment. I moved the "Memes" section to here, as well. Pearl748 (talk) 07:05, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Greetings, pinging @Joeykai and Britishfinance:, Joey what should I do about the failed verification? Additionally, Britishfinance, I have one orphan ref if anyone wants to use it. Sincerely, User:Zanygeniuschat For info on 1 Jul 20 move, see this. 20:35, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello, about the failed verification, if I understood well, what was the citation verifying is that this was the first global pandemic to occur during the proliferation of social media use, but I did not find anything in the article directly expressing this ("The first to occur during social media proliferation", "The first pandemic with social media extended use", are examples of what I was expecting), this is why I placed the template. Read the article again, and if you agree it does not directly prove the point, then, use another source which does, but if you find something I may have missed, take out the template and explain why you did so in the edit summary. If it is that I am missing what the citation verifies, please, let me know. Apolo234 (talk) 06:55, 12 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review

This article could have a lot more information and facts about how specifically this pandemic has affected social media. You mention in the first sentence of the lead how social media is affected by the pandemic but there isnt really any more information to back that up. You have lots of references but its hard to understand the topic with the lack of evidence provided.

Kieranmitha98 (talk) 23:22, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I have added more to the lead section regarding how social media use has increased due to the pandemic, and what it is generally being used for. I may add more detailed sections about these topics in the artcile later. Pearl748 (talk) 23:50, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'm looking at adding some information to Timeline of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic from November to December 2019. Specifically I'm interested in documenting or finding information about Weibo account XiaoShanGou (微信公号“小山狗”). If the account still exist I would be grateful for a link, especially a post from 28 January 2020 (1月28日). Request for adding lines about TikTok

edit

Hello, I'd like to suggest the addition of a few well-sourced sentences about TikTok. I'm not making these changes myself because I work for ByteDance, TikTok's parent company.

  1. "Messaging and video call services" section - "Use of TikTok grew significantly as an apparent result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with global downloads in March 2020 up 5 percent compared to February 2020 and global gross revenue up 10 percent over that period.[1]"
  2. "Use as entertainment" section - "During the COVID-19 pandemic, many families began using TikTok to bond and collaborate on videos when social distancing rules limited physical closeness.[2]"
  3. "Spreading information" section - Add TikTok to the list of platforms at the end of the second sentence of the section, i.e., "The CDC, WHO, medical journals, and health care organisations have been updating and spreading information across numerous platforms with partnerships with TikTok, Facebook, Google Scholar and Twitter." Then add the sentence, "TikTok users who search for content related to the pandemic are directed to the WHO website.[3]"

 Y Partly done
  • Messaging and video call services—I have refractored this to Global downloads for TikTok went up 5% in March 2020 compared to February. Generally for COI edit request, particularly for paid editors, the more significant claims should have multiple sources. The gross revenue not having multiple supporting reliable soruces, it has been omitted.
  • Use as entertainment—I find this to be slightly lean promotional. I won't implement this for covert advertising.
  • Spreading information  Implemented with minor changes.

Looks like #1 and #3 are done, more or less. I don't think #2 fits the scope of the entry--and TikTok is already mentioned here. I'm going to mark as "answered" as this is mostly done. (Edit: Looks like someone already got to this) --FeldBum (talk) 20:19, 26 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
