Backlogged?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

How to promote an accepted hook

  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

  •   Article was promoted to Good Article within the last couple of days, is easily long enough, well written and copiously referenced. In my opinion the original hook, about being the first to get a BA degree, is best - very interesting indeed. The fact is cited immediately after it, in the lead introduction, to a page hosted on the university website. If I was being picky I'd say the info about achieving a BA degree should be included in the main body of the article too, because the lead intro is normally a summary of the main article. The article has been passed for GA status. If others do not feel ALTOa is right, perhaps we could go with ALT1. Or someone, perhaps you, could suggest an alternative wording for the clunky one?   ALT0a looks fine to me. I can understand Airshipjungleman's concerns about the factual accuracy, considering it seems to be a claim from the college ("claimed to be" would not go amiss in the first paragraph).   Lauchballer is right in saying the prose quality of the first paragraph has been substantially degraded since the GA review, and is now difficult to parse. ALT0a is also just ... weird: the phrase "descendant of ... mother", the missing definite articles, etc. Would suggest instead ALT0b: that Mary Jane Patterson, whose mother was an African American slave, gained a BA degree in 1862 having taken a "gentleman's course"?   • Not a review, but are we sure that the impressionist painting by Coe is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license? The source is offline, so it's difficult to check. I'm not sure if the Oregon Legislature and Coe would need to agree to jointly release the work in order for the license to be valid. In fact, the Knesset’s Committee on Culture and Education held a discussion with Yadin on this particular issue in February and March of 1968… On March 12, 1969, Yigael Yadin told Haaretz that he was opposed to a public burial ceremony. He also stated that he believed that the bones were those of the people of Masada but that he lacked definitive proof. Thanks @Launchballer: I have added a cross-ref (it had been referenced at the end of the paragraph, but the paragraph was then split in to two). Re the IP's comments, the citation quote gives all the info about the funeral, and the rest of his book is about the myth. I guess the IP is referring to the latter question. I can bring some more quotes if helpful.
For context, all the sources in the article say essentially the same thing – there is only one known original source for this event, Josephus. The Israeli national myth version differs from that story in a number of significant ways. We can add some nuance to the words "is now known to be a myth" if that is helpful, but the underlying point is beyond doubt.

The wording that it "is now known to be a myth" is simply not supported by the source provided. Perhaps "believed by some to be a myth" or even better "described by one scholar as a myth" could be supported by the citation, but "is now known to be a myth" embellishes the source far beyond any justifiable limit. @Alansohn: regarding your comment from a few weeks ago, a new section (Masada_myth#Decline) has now been added to the article as suggested by User:Uppagus. It includes a list of the notable scholars which published on this topic between 1975 and Nachman Ben-Yehuda's book in 1996, as given by Ben-Yehuda.
I have read widely on this topic, including the most recent work by Jodi Magness, and can firmly confirm that there is no scholarly debate as to whether this specific narrative is a myth. Not a single dissenting voice. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Launchballer: it would be great to have a new reviewer look at this now. There was an initial aversion to the article by some editors - hence the AfD and subsequent talk page discussions. But these challenges have petered out as concerned editors found the time to read the underlying sourcing in detail, and it seems now to be clear to all that this is a well-covered subject with many decades of academic work underpinning it. The article has benefited from the additional scrutiny, which has made it even stronger. I'm looking at this now for the first time; it's certainly strongly worded but all its claims are backed up, so this should be fine. Thank you @Launchballer: I enjoyed reading those articles you linked to. I am genuinely amazed that an article that has had almost 5 million views since you recreated it last year had all those delete votes.
I have done some more work to the article,[4] including adding a further source which works neatly as an end-of-sentence citation for the hook (Sheldon 1998, p. 448: "The belief system he refers to is a myth created around the story of Masada and the Jewish fighters who committed suicide there at the end of the Great Jewish War against Rome in A.D. 73. The story, as Josephus tells it, is not one of heroism. The sicarii on Masada were simply an extremist group of terrorists who had never participated in the Jewish Revolt to begin with and had spent more time killing other Jews than fighting the Romans. Modern twentieth-century Zionists, however, took the original story, eliminated the more embarrassing parts (like the massacre of Jews at Ein Gedi by the sicarii), then used the remaining core to construct a "mythical narrative" of heroism, sacrifice, and national pride for modern Israelis."   • The page had 649 B of readable prose prior to expansion, and currently has 8755, so it has been successfully expanded over 5 times. WP:EARWIG says "Violation Unlikely". QPQ is done. Hooks are interesting. However, there is a problem with this nomination. The first hook is cited to a Google Doc that I cannot access. I don't know what the document is or if it's even reliable.     I am unsure about the first couple of sentences, the source does not explicitly say the childhood was spent in Triunfo de la Cruz, and at any rate it does say he left to Tegucigalpa at 13 so he did some growing up there too. "hermanos" also does not mean only brothers, it is used for the group of both genders. Not a DYKcrit, but the fourth sentence should really spell out COH, and there is a disconnect between the lead sentence and the body regarding flag bearer or co-flag bearer. Regarding "bronze medal at the cadet world championships in Hungary", the source says he was in the cadet category, not that cadet was the name of the tournament (after a bit of research, probably the World Junior Wrestling Championships already mentioned in the next paragraph, in the 15-17 category).
    Haven't checked the other paragraphs, but moving onto the hook, I can't verify the 2015 portion from the source, may be missing it although it appears correct. I made some changes ([6]), including clarifying COH, changing 'brothers' to 'one of five children', re-wording Triunfo de la Cruz, addressing the 'co' flagbearer, etc. Looking at the source again, I realize that it mentions, through Google Translate, "It is worth remembering that Mejía won the only silver medal in Honduras in the last XVII Pan American Games of Toronto 2015" – which is odd because from what I can find, they only had one medalist that year. Let me know if you'd like me to dig further to find one mentioning him as the 'sole' medalist. I did find that hook kind of interesting, but I can try to find another if you'd like. Thoughts?   • Hmm, more curiously, either you and I both missed this or it's been updated, but his year of birth is currently 1995. Confirmed here by his age, which also notes he was the only Honduran to enter the 2024 Olympics by qualifying, and the specific entry into the 97kg category could be mentioned. Also he has a son, and this source confirms a childhood in Triunfo de la Cruz and has a nice anecdote about selling spinning tops.

And concerning the image: I'm confident that Seychelles News Agency has permission to license certain Seychelles Nation images under various Creative Commons Licenses. The Seychelles News Agency regularly publishes (not reprints- actually originally publishes) Seychelles Nation photographs under a CC license; with other third party photos (social media photos, photos taken from other news agencies/government bodies), they're very scrupulous about marking them as all rights reserved. (see [11], [12], and [13] for examples of how they normally do it). I mean, it is theoretically possible that the Seychelles News Agency is just being incredibly callous about giving away images from one very particular news agency, but I'm going to say that I'm sure they have an agreement of some kind; there's no alternative that makes sense to me. I think we can assume good faith on their licensing, as much as we can assume good faith on any website with a solid record of providing attribution and correctly providing the license of so many images.

I don't see that in our guidelines — take a look at WP:DYKINT. I've personally written about a murder and it was added to DYK. Perhaps you're thinking of our rule that hooks must use a neutral point of view? In this case, the hook may seem "downbeat" but it's very neutral, stating simple facts.   •   This is a neat fact, I'll jump on this. Article is new and long enough, and QPQ is met. Reuters is a reliable source and the primary proposed hook is obviously uncontroversial. The first hook is definitely the most direct and interesting, though personally I'd word it in a more attention-grabbing way such as "...that there is a Japanese girl group that performs North Korean pop songs?", stating it less as a fact and more as an anecdote. Not a dealbreaker if you prefer it as is though, the hook is perfectly acceptable. My main concern is with the article itself. While it's mostly presentable, seems copyright free, and has adequate sourcing, I'm concerned about the accuracy of its framing of the topic. It calls them a girl group and states they do musical performances of Korean pop. However, most sources (both utilized and other general google results) appear to call them a fan club, and I can only find any reference to them doing dance, not singing. The Reuters sources cited for them performing music has a lot of photos where they appear to be dancing without any apparent microphones, and again calls them a fan club who are dancing. This also seems more consistent with their undefined scope of membership. If they are not in fact a musical act, this is a major flaw in the article and the hook, which directly touches on them as a pop act.   •   Full review is to follow, but before doing so, I would suggest dropping ALT1 and ALT2 because both of them are rather specialist hooks that may require knowledge of Japanese media. The first hook is probably the only suitable option among the three as currently written, but it needs to be rephrased since it isn't clear that "Harada" is in fact the mangaka (after all, Harada is a common Japanese surname). My suggestion would be to change "Harada" to "its artist" since DYK hooks generally should avoid mentioning names of people without articles by name unless necessary. I'd also like to see other additional hook suggestions as while ALT0 is okayish, it's not the best out there and doesn't really scream "hooky".   • How does the source verify either of the hooks? The "lack of good men" part checks out, but the "their"/"there" etc. part is just referencing the lyrics. This is drawing a conclusion that the article doesn't state. Songs are often works of fiction, so I'm not comfortable with making these statements without a proper source. What's in the hook comes off as somewhere between synthesis and original research. I honestly have no idea what ALT1 means and its certainly not referenced in the article. The article only has the line "moanin' and bitchin'" and doesn't infer that Carpenter serves it in the kitchen: the lyrics do.
  • I dislike the links. It's unclear to most readers except a few pop-culture stans that "a lack of good men" and "moanin' and bitchin'" will link to a Carpenter song. (MOS:EASTEREGG)

  • Done. The problem was that I started writing "on the fly", and by logic, if the story is completed (the comic itself is) he must have been kidnapped after finishing it. And yet, it happened a year earlier. I then corrected the article when I realized that and sought sources with more detail, but I forgot to update the lead. As for the proposed ALT1, that doesn't seem like better wording to me. "Murdered" (a public figure by a national government) would suggest something more visible and/or public, like a firing squad execution, and just "disappeared" sounds like a magic trick. A hook should be understood on its own, without any other context at all. "enforced disappearance" is more precise and does not leave space for misunderstandings. Several statements cited to the Wenatchee World article are not in the current version of the article, such as the mention of Team 13. In addition, the article says that the fire may have "originated from a human-caused structure fire", but The Seattle Times only mentioned that the fire was "human-caused" with no mention of structures; the sentence also uses the Wenatchee World as a source and that too does not mention a "structure". A QPQ has also yet to be provided.

A QPQ has been done. Almost all the sources are offline so I will assume good faith for the sourcing. The main issue right now is the hook: it's only mentioned in the lede without a citation. The rest of the article does not appear to directly support the "routinely imprisoned" statement, only that Witnesses have been regularly arrested and some have been jailed.     Building is complicated. Only part of the structure made it to the UK. The inner stonework did not and while it is freestanding it would have originally been inside a larger temple. You've also got the argument that Cleopatra's Needle, London is a building. This season on Extreme Makeover: Wikipedia Edition: A 1993 bestselling sensation that made millions for its compiler and led to several follow-ups, including a PBS animated series--and (par for the course with such ventures) a couple of competitors. (Ignoring his personal/career controversies and the age of the tales he collected.) Despite its status, its WP article never got the attention worthy of its legacy (in the 16! years since I last chanced upon editing it), hardly moving past the few paragraphs it was allocated back then. Think of the parable of the Good Samaritan,[1] and you'll realise my role in the proceedings this month. (Can't quite recall how I suddenly reapproached it days ago, though.) Optimised reconstruction of link chain on Android Chrome that brought me back there, thanks to a little perusal of TV Tropes on August 15 (and considering the browser's limitations, it was a chore getting to that date): Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child → "The Fisherman and His Wife" → "The Frog Prince" → Adventures from the Book of Virtues.
I've heard talk that stubs are considered the ugly ducklings[1] of this project. Well, sir, I mustered up enough courage--and sacrificed enough time--to turn this specimen into a swan nineteen-fold[2] by the time of this nomination (according to WP:Prosesize). (Cf. my efforts on Apparition (company) back during last year's Memorial season.)
As a side note, work on this DYK candidate coincided with the U.S. political conventions.
Even though this won't lead to a coveted Four Award, I'm in the running for the other three fragments. Could this lead to my first FA star in the next three or so months? Until then, wish me luck, and stay tuned for my next DYK nomination (before this month's over).

Thank you @Ergo Sum: Regarding the image, it is used in the Moumni 2020 Brill-Muqarnas article in the bibliography. They say "Fig. 3. Anonymous, Mustafa Khaznadar and His Son Muham-mad, circa 1855. Oil on canvas, 82 × 131 cm. Tunis Institut National du Patrimoine, collection Qsar es-Saïd, inv. no. 46-07-28-83." If the unknown artist was 30 when painting it, that would mean they were born 200 years ago, and thus are statistically likely to have died more than 100 years ago.   • @Panamitsu: I need you to please fix source 4, cited several times. Atlas Obscura articles are user-generated and user-editable with minimal oversight, and the site's terms of use includes disclaimers about user submissions. Many of the "places" articles cite Wikipedia as a source of their information or otherwise lack clear or reliable sourcing. Per WP:GUNREL: These articles should generally not be referenced on Wikipedia. I personally would have no issue with you using this source once or twice for something uncontroversial, however unfortunately for an article to appear on the Main Page, I don't think this source is gonna cut it.   •   Right now the main issue I have with the article is the sourcing of the article. A lot of it is cited to the Metropolitan Opera press release, which isn't an independent source. I'm not sure about his relationship to the Dresdner Philharmonie (it's not made clear in the article), but if he was affiliated with them at that point, that would mean most of the article is not cited to an independent source. Citing to non-independent sources isn't prohibited and it's often fine, but it's not ideal and there are editors at DYK that may object to it as not meeting WP:PRIMARY. If he was never affiliated with the Dresdner Philharmonie then my issue is resolved since that counts as an independent source; otherwise, the article will need to be beefed up with additional sourcing.
Another concern is the hook. I have mixed feelings if it meets WP:DYKINT. On the one hand, being appointed to such a position in an institution as prestigious as the Met is a great achievement. On the other hand, DYK is not fond of these "people doing their jobs" hooks and other editors have objected to similar hooks in the past. At best, the hook may marginally meet DYKINT and I'm inclined to decline the hook at this point, especially if alternatives can be proposed.
Otherwise, the article appears to meet DYK requirements: a QPQ has been done and the article is both new enough and long enough, with the hook being cited and referenced. For now, my suggestions are to clarify his relationship in this nomination page about his relationship with the Dresdner Philharmonie, and to suggest alternate hooks (ideally ones that aren't just simply "he is doing his job" hooks). The article is somewhat lacking on his personal life or information about his life before starting his career, so if those are expanded, there may be some usable hooks. The "Opera of the year" fact might be a good starting point for an alternative hook, especially if the article can't be expanded further. There seems to be a language barrier here as the issue was never about the other sources being in German. The issue is that multiple statements in the article were referenced either to the Metropolitan Opera press release (which is not an independent source as Michael is affiliated with them), or the Dresdner Philharmonie profile. I inquired if he was ever affiliated with the Dresdner Philharmonie and I never got a proper response, so here's the issue: if he was affiliated with them at some point, that would mean the Dresdner Philharmonie source is also not independent, meaning most of the article is cited towards non-independent sources. However, if he was never affiliated at all, then that means the Dresdner Philharmonie is independent, and thus it would mean my concern about the article being heavily based on non-independent sources was mistaken. Regarding the use of independent sources: for uncontroversial information it should be fine and I'm willing to accept that in this case, but the problem is that other DYK regulars can be pretty strict regarding that and may raise objections. The New York Times article does help since it adds variety to the sourcing, but if most of the article is still based on the Met Opera link, that might raise eyebrows from other editors or the promoter (not necessarily from me). I appreciate the ping, Narutolovehinata5. The issue with press releases is that they would be considered both self-published and primary sources, and press releases in general tend to only highlight one side of the story. As such, they don't contribute to a subject's notability, and articles that rely on press releases are more likely to be challenged at articles for deletion. With a newspaper like the New York Times, they have a fairly robust fact-checking process, so they would be able to analyze information critically and report on facts that aren't mentioned in the press release.   • I've been thinking about this for a while, and after some pondering I would suggest dropping the "appointed chorus master" angle and instead proposing a completely different hook fact. I am not denying that him being appointed to the position is a major accomplishment, but I have reservations that it would meet WP:DYKINT. More specifically, I have doubts that the hook will appeal to non-specialist audiences. It's not the kind of hook that will attract readers to possibly click on the article and read more about Michael.
A future hook could still mention that he was appointed as choir master, just that the hook isn't specifically about that. The current hook fact really no different from a hook that goes "that "Kelly Ortberg was appointed CEO of Boeing after previously serving as CEO of Rockwell Collins?", which other editors may object to as a "person doing their job" hook. Instead, a new hook could go something like "... that Tilman Michael, who was appointed chorus master of the Metropolitan Opera in 2024, was [interesting fact about him]?" The image doesn't really work at the low resolution IMO, I think one of the aviary shots would be better. Some assorted comments since I read the whole article, but are minor and don't block the DYK approval:
    • The Animals section starts with "The zoo is home to as many as 112 species as of 2013" (and in the infobox); is there really no updated figure 10 years later?
    • "The administration of mayor Ed Koch and the New York Zoological Society signed a fifty-year agreement" - did the administration really sign the agreement and not the mayor himself? The NYT source says the mayor signed it.
    • Many animals are not wikilinked on first reference in the Description section, but later are during the Animals section - was there a reason for that?
    • I'm low-key skeptical that the non-free logo in the infobox adds anything, it basically just says the zoo's name. Legoktm (talk) 06:55, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
