Ove Almborn and Lund Cathedral

edit

Hi Esculenta, it's me from the Anders Bure article again. Sorry to soil your recently cleaned talk page! I was just bumming around the GA nominations section and saw you have nominated the article on Ove Almborn to GA, and got curious. I saw in your article that he wrote his first paper on the lichen flora of Lund Cathedral. I (re)-wrote most of that article (and got also that one promoted to GA, by the way) and in particularly enjoyed adding a small section on the flora of the cathedral. I'd love to add a line about Almborn and his paper there, what do you think? Which source should I look at in that case, would you happen to have a link? Best, Yakikaki (talk) 20:49, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think that would be an excellent addition to the flora section, and I believe the Frödén (2009) source that's used in the Almborn article would be good for this, because it's secondary and it's about Lund. In case you can't access the source, here's a quote (pp. 460–461): "Almborn was introduced to lichenology by Bertil Hedvall, and when he came to Lund to study at the university in 1933 he was already interested in the subject. His first article on lichens was published in 1935 and concerned the lichen flora on the ancient cathedral in central Lund (Almborn 1935)." I haven't been able to find Almborn 1935 online. Esculenta (talk) 21:46, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
p.s. The lichen redlink bugged me, so I whipped up an article for it. Interestingly, even though the species was (weirdly) not validly published, it's still notable in the Wikipedia-sense. Esculenta (talk) 03:44, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I added it – happy to see that redlink gone, too. Nice working with you. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 18:39, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Parmotrema perlatum

edit

So glad to see you've tackled Parmotrema perlatum! (It has long been on my radar too.) As one of our most-read articles, it was certainly well-deserving of the "Esculenta treatment". ;) MeegsC (talk) 09:48, 26 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Heh, that article had been sitting on my hard drive as a partially written draft for about 2 years. Then I saw the Bilorv challenge "Vitality", which gave me the impetus to finish it up. Am now on a side mission to complete as many Bilorv challenges as I can with lichen-related articles :) Esculenta (talk) 15:25, 26 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Flora Antarctica

edit

The lichens Parmelia cincinnata, Sphaerophoron tenerum, and Lecanora palaecea (clockwise from bottom left)

Esculenta, it occurs to me that the Flora Antarctica   which I worked on some years ago, together with its four subsidiary (volume) articles, covers a great many curious lichens. I've necessarily said little about these in the five articles. You might want to add a little in the way of introduction to these hardy little Antarcticans, if you felt like it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:42, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the lichen alert; I'm (very slowly) working on a list of Antarctic lichens and will be mentioning these works (and maybe use some of their images) in the intro. Esculenta (talk) 16:19, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh good. Marvellous lichen paintings by Walter Hood Fitch, presumably all done on board ship. Not sure anybody's ever done better. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:25, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Umbilicaria torrefacta

edit

On 4 July 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Umbilicaria torrefacta, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that historically, lichens like Umbilicaria torrefacta have been used to naturally dye traditional Scottish tartans and textiles? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Umbilicaria torrefacta. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Umbilicaria torrefacta), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Charles De Geer

Hi, in case you are still up for it I have now re-nominated Charles De Geer for GA. I'll be back in my old routine from Monday so I should be able to work on improvements from then. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 17:17, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yakikaki, I'll wait out the weekend (and maybe complete some of my current open reviews), and will grab it if no one else does by Monday. Esculenta (talk) 20:54, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Margaret Eliza Maltby

edit

Hi Esculenta! Thanks for all your suggestions about Margaret Eliza Maltby. I've tried to revise the article in line with your suggestions, so I would appreciate if you could take another look at it when you get the chance.

A few extra notes:

"European Fellowship" was the name of the fellowship, which is why it's in capitals. Would quotation marks help make that clearer?

Yes it was normal for advanced students to help as instructors at women's colleges, especially if they were pursuing advanced studies elsewhere at the same time. Since Maltby was going for her second bachelor's degree and had experience teaching, she would have qualified.

And... in the interest of full disclosure.... I *am* Behrman (2020), which is why I've tried to avoid adding references to that work whenever possible. I've added the ones you suggested but tried to avoid it in other places.

Cheers! Physhist (talk) 13:58, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Going to add these comments and others to the Maltby talk page too in a bit.... Physhist (talk) 14:00, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
