From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rjaw (mix); cognate with Burmese ရော (rau:, to mix), Jingpho yau (be mixed), kəjau (to mix, intermix), compare Chepang [script needed] (ljawh-ʔo, mixed) and Proto-Mienic *klaau3 (Schuessler, 2007).
