2go is a semi-free mobile social networking and online dating service offering in-app purchases. The app is provided by 2go Interactive (Pty) Ltd which is currently based in Cape Town, South Africa. 2go also functions as an Advertising and Market Research Platform. Brands and advertising agencies employ the 2go Ad Platform to target and engage with 2go's user base and the 2go Market Research offering uses the 2go community to conduct real-time surveys and polls and deliver actionable insights to clients.[1][2]

Device support published by 2go in June 2013 accounted for approximately 1,500 different devices, which were mainly feature phones and smartphones namely: Android, Blackberry OS and Blackberry 10.[3][4]

The number of registered users reported by 2go in 2014, was approximately 21 million across Africa, 12,5 million of whom were based in Nigeria,[5][6][7] 6 million in South Africa, 1 million in Kenya, and others in Indonesia and India.[8][9]

2go Interactive no longer publishes the number of monthly active users per region.

History

2go was created in 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa, by a group of University of Witwatersrand computer science students. The service was originally developed as a students-only mobile website intended to function as a communication tool among students for the uploading and sharing of timetables, lectures, and rendezvous with each other.[6][10]

In 2008, two of the founders[who?] left, leaving Alan Wolff and Ashley Peter behind.[11] Under their management, 2go moved away from the students-only model by targeting developing markets in Africa such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana.[6][12] Despite a lack of external investment[13] 2go continued to grow due to its focus on feature phones which most African mobile markets consisted of at the time.[14] Peter Lockhart and Marc Herson later joined the 2go team as directors with consulting and coaching services rendered by Michal Leon.[15][16]

In June 2013, 2go for Android was released on the Google Play Store and in December 2014 had reached over 2 million monthly active users on Android.[17][18] The Android version influenced many design changes and additions which other platforms received in the v3.5 release.[19][20] 2go for BlackBerry 10 was released in April 2014.[21]

In 2014 it was reported that over 7 billion messages was sent across the service per month, mainly within the pay-to-use chatrooms where users are charged per message, per invitation sent, and per profile view using the platform's currency called GoCredits which users have to buy.[22]

According to multiple user reviews on Google's Play Store, 2go also charges users for forgotten passwords and randomly charges users to enter chatrooms where users are required to re-verify the mobile number linked to their account. Further reviews state that 2go does not have voice or video calling functionality yet.[23]

The major reason why 2go failed was because they could not innovate fast enough to survive on Android which came all of a sudden.[24]

2go simply could not innovate truly adding any new feature or even optimizing it well for Android. They merely ported its code base onto Android without developing anything new on that platform.[24]

Features

2go is a full featured feature phone instant messaging application.[6] Supported devices require Java and internet connectivity via CSD, GPRS, 3G or WiFi to operate.[25][26] Originally intended as a feature phone exclusive application,[6] versions for Android, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 powered smartphones have also been released.[3][4][27] 2go offers one-on-one and group chat services in addition to paid-for chat room facilities which makes use of the platform's GoCredits currency, which is also spent on games and other content.[28]

2go Fastlane – 2go added a new feature to the messenger called 2go 6.2.0 fastlane. From this fastlane, you get quick access to live Sports Updates, up to date news from Supersports and News24. [29]
