Punam Krishan (born 28 May 1983) is a Scottish general practitioner, columnist and author, known for serving as a resident doctor on the BBC programme Morning Live. She is also set to appear as a contestant on the twenty-second series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2024.

Early life and medical career

[edit]

Krishan was born on 28 May 1983 in Glasgow, Scotland.[1][2] She is the eldest of two daughters born to Indian parents who arrived in the United Kingdom from Punjab in the late 1970s.[3] Krishan said she "grew up in [her] father's corner shop," where she would help out, and that it was ingrained in her and her sister that "education was the key to freedom [...] You were either going to be a doctor, lawyer, accountant or a failure." They would regularly holiday in her mother's home city of Kapurthala.[4] She attended Hillhead Primary before moving up to the secondary school Notre Dame High School, and ultimately achieved the grades to study medicine at the University of Glasgow.[5] Krishan said that it wasn't until she became a doctor that she "started to feel liberated."[6]

After qualifying as a doctor in 2006, she was enrolled in the Royal College of General Practitioners between 2008 and 2011, and became an NHS general practitioner, previously working at Forest Hill Road Group Practice and Pollokshaws Medical Centre, as well as working as a medical educator, teaching at the University of Glasgow.[7][8] Krishnan has regularly spoke openly about the racism and discrimination she has received from patients whilst working as a doctor.[9][10]

Media career

[edit]

Krishan is a columnist, having written pieces for HuffPost in 2018, and for Glasgow Times between 2019 and 2022.[5] She has also written for Pulse. [11] Since 2019, she has worked as a columnist for i.[12] Krishan is a director of British Society of Lifestyle Medicine.[13]

In October 2019, Krishan fronted the BBC Scotland programme Laid Bare, in which volunteer patients were assessed by medics before being interviewed by Krishan, who would advise them about their health.[14] Since 2020, Krishan has appeared as one of the resident doctors and health experts on the BBC magazine programme Morning Live, on which she regularly appears to discuss a variety of medical issues and answer questions.[15][16] In December 2022, Krishan appeared on an episode of The Weakest Link, where she was voted off in the second round.[17] Krishan is also an author, having written her debut book How to Be a Doctor and Other Life-Saving Jobs in 2022, which is a guide on how to embark on work in the medical industry.[18] In April 2024, the publisher DK signed a deal with Krishan to write two children's books, You and Your Body, an interactive flap board book and A Superhero’s First Aid Manual, a guide for children to help them in medical emergencies, both of which are set to be published in 2025.[19]

In August 2024, it was announced that Krishan would be a contestant on the twenty-second series of Strictly Come Dancing.[20] Upon joining the show, Krishan said "[Strictly] still doesn’t feel real" and that she was "overjoyed" to be a contestant on the series [...] adding that it was "out of her comfort zone, but was up for the journey and would give it [her] absolute all."[21]

Personal life

[edit]

Since 2011, Krishan has been married to Sandesh Gulhane, a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Glasgow region and the Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care.[22] They had have two children together, a son and a daughter.[23][24]
