Downeast Cider House, also known as Downeast, is a cider house in East Boston, Massachusetts. Downeast is known for its "hazy," unfiltered cider. The company is the biggest cider brand in New England and is sold in 18 states. [1] In addition to cider, Downeast produces "non-cider" options, with notable flavors like blue slushie, lemon Italian ice, and orange creamsicle. [2]

Downeast was founded by Ross Brockman and Tyler Mosher in 2011 as undergraduates at Bates College in Maine. Their friend Ben Manter was initially part of the endeavor, but later left the company. Before settling on the name "Downeast," the three men pitched the name "Three Idiots Cider," however, that name had already been trademarked by a California winery. Inspired by their Maine roots, the Brockman, Mosher, and Manter came up with the name Downeast.[3]
The company began producing cider in 2011 by creating its original blend. They claim the original blend came from "years of recipe tweaking on an old orchard in Maine."[1] This old orchard was Manter's family's orchard, from which Brockman and Mosher received a "steady stream of apples" to help them experiment.[3]
The trio first established Downeast in the Central Maine Power mill in Waterville, Maine. In 2012, the company moved to Leominster, Massachusetts, where they occupied a warehouse. This move marked the beginning of their significant growth and expansion. Moving to Massachusetts, the trio settled in Charlestown in a 9,000 square foot warehouse underneath the Tobin Bridge and remained in that location until 2016. Downeast currently operates in a 16,000 square foot warehouse in the Boston Harbor Shipyard in East Boston, a testament to their success and potential for further growth. < ref name= ":1"/>
After Manter departed from the company, Mosher's older brother Matt joined. Brockman and both Tyler and Matt Moshers made the Forbes' "30 under 30" list in 2014.[4]
