AutoWikiBrowser

To speed up maintaining pages for WP:Curling such as adding pages that should be covered by the WP, assessing pages for the WP, fixing links to disambig pages A202985 (talk) 18:40, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to request AWB rights for my other account User:LittlerPuppers, mostly for use in typo/grammatical-type corrections. I will also probably be using JWB for a significant portion of these. LittlePuppers (talk) 03:36, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lately I've been manually fixing a lot of broken library proxy urls, which have predictable unwanted elements like https://dx.doi.org.exampleproxy.com/10.1234/56789&user=John_Doe. I would like permission to start using JWB on pages with proxy urls. Cheers, gnu57 14:16, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've been working on an article where I need to repeatedly change things within the article (more specifically, it's an FAC where I've needed to change citation formats) and I think I could make great use of the Find and replace feature, both in that specific case and in similar subsequent cases. Without prejudice to your request, John M Wolfson, have you tried using an external editor to do 'find and replace' in a single article? Something as simple as notepad++ on Windows (or almost any text editor on Linux) will do that job for you. AWB's power lies in its ability to do similar edits on a whole list of related articles, and perhaps you would find that useful as well. --RexxS (talk) 15:20, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
RexxS, I actually tried it on Microsoft Word, and it went much better than I expected. However, I have learned much about citation expectations and parameters from my FAC experience, and perhaps I could use AWB to automate some citation improvements (such as adding "|url-access=subscription" to all my refs coming from newspapers.com) across all the articles I have created/contributed to, if you feel AWB is necessary and sufficient for such a task. There are more than 2,000 NSW politicians, each of whom have an article here & a bio on the NSW parliament website ... and they changed the url. I have created a simple CS1 specific-source wrapper Template:cite NSW Parliament, I have a table linking all the ID's with their WP article. While I could do it manually, I would like to speed the process up. Find bruce (talk) 12:40, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Find bruce: Template:cite NSW Parliament already has 431 transclusions, so am I right to assume you want AWB access to semi-automate another 1500+ article updates? --RexxS (talk) 15:34, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@RexxS: yes that's exactly what I was hoping to achieve - I have been manually editing to confirm how it is used & it has been suggested to me that AWB will help to semi-automate the process. I have raised the template (& re-member from which it was copied) at the Australian politics project page & got some useful feedback from a couple of editors. Most of the first 100 or so transclusions are current politicians, including the premier & I am not aware of any objections or concerns about the template, but I plan to start slowly with AWB. It has also been suggested that a bot may be a good solution, but little steps first. Find bruce (talk) 22:17, 25 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This is a long-term editor with sensible attitude, plenty of edits and a concentration on content. Coupled with a good reason for using AWB, I'm happy to approve this request. --RexxS (talk) 01:07, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Already done (automated response): This user already has AutoWikiBrowser access. MusikBot talk 01:10, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Okaswad: This isn't the right venue to ask, but I've removed the stub template for you. You could have done that yourself, but I understand your reluctance as a new editor. --RexxS (talk) 19:20, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Declined This editor is a student at Boston University, taking part in a Wikipedia-based assignment on Marine Biology and is still finding out where things are. I think we can archive this section now. --RexxS (talk) 19:20, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
