Independent versus no party

[edit]

@R'n'B: I disagree with the conversion of "no party affiliation" to "Independent" in the Vermont gubernatorial election articles. In fact, in the early days of Vermont, there were no parties to be independent of, so everyone ran without party affiliation.

I'm not going to change the articles, because I don't know what the consensus among other editors on this question will be. But I wanted to make sure my disagreement is noted as the possible start point for a discussion.

The problem is that the various "electionbox" templates do not take kindly to inserting any random text in the "party" fields. In particular, the "party" name used in these templates must be the title of a Wikipedia article. Currently, No party affiliation redirects to Unaffiliated, which is a disambiguation page, not an article. Conceivably, you could change that to redirect to Independent politician or to some other article, but then you would also need to create all the corresponding political party templates needed to make the electionbox system work correctly. Or you could ask the editor(s) who maintain those templates to fix them so that they are not so inflexible. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:21, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
