1960 - Middleton Railway

[edit]

The text states that the Middleton Railway becomes the first standard gauge line in the British Isles to be operated by volunteers as a preserved railway. The text should use the term United Kingdom, as this is the area in which it operated - using cross-country jurisdiction comparisons is confusing and unnecessary. It implies that a "British" railway in the "British" isles is a natural region of operation and a single jurisdiction - which is incorrect (in 1960), and is the reason why on Wikipedia, the consensus is that the term should only be used in a geographical context. Why use a geographical term for a cultural/industrial article anyway? It is more appropriate to use a geopolitical term - so chose from either "United Kingdom", "Britain", or "British Islands". --Bardcom (talk) 12:56, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
