[edit]the 'structure' section needs a lot of work, it is not really in english anf there is an excessive use of comma's and reads more like a list than a paragraph. Details could be fleshed out a bit more, and the long sentances broken up into shorter sentances containing more detail.
For Example. current text:
- "This regiment, raised by the Union Defense Committee of New York city, under special authority from the War Department, was accepted by the State May 27, 1861; organized and recruited at New York city under Col. Frederick George D'Utassy, and mustered in the service of the United States for three years at Washington, D. C., June 6, 1861, to date from May 28, 1861. "
Maybe change to:
- The 39th New York Volunteer Regiment was raised by the Union Defence Committee of New York under the authority of the War Department (any specfic reason why? at the insistence of?). The Regiment was accepted by the state on the 27th May 1861 under the command of Colonel Frederick George D'Utassy. ect. (couldn't understand what last bit was getting at.)
more details will need to be added, for example why, was the regiment created? did they fight anywhere with distinction (were they the key to victory)?
the second paragraph needs a lot of work
there is also inadequate referencing
see this GA class article for ideas:
