Two Rabbi Ishmaels

[edit]

There are two Tannaim named "Ishmael"" - the first generation Ishmael ben Elisha ha-Kohen and the third generation Rabbi Ishmael (who may have been the former's grandson.) Since only the former could have been a "high priest" (because the second and subsequent generations of Tannaim - see Tannaim#Generations lived after the Destruction of the Second Temple,) I have suggested here that this may be a case of mis-identification between the two. However, it is also possible that the dates for the latter Tanna are wrong, as he is said to have been a boy at the time of the Destruction (in 70 CE) yet is commonly attributed to have been born in 90 CE, much too late. I have pointed this birth date discrepancy out in the appropriate article about him. And now it's time to hit the books and look for more sources to sort this out.... ;^) --Eliyahu S Talk 17:15, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
