Transcriptions

[edit]

I am assuming that the transcriptions are not mere transliterations, but are supposed to serve a purpose of pronunciation guide, as well? If that is the case, apart from some transcriptions missing entirely, the existing ones are erroneous considering the ħarakāt that were used, so I suggest the following amendments/inclusions:

1) Arab world (Arabic: اَلْعَالَمُ الْعَرَبِيُّ al-ʿālam al-ʿarabī)Arab world (Arabic: الْعَالَمُ الْعَرَبِيّ al-ʿālamu 'l-ʿarabīyy)
2) Arab homeland (اَلْوَطَنُ الْعَرَبِيُّ al-waṭan al-ʿarabī)Arab homeland (Arabic: الْوَطَنُ الْعَرَبِيُّ al-waṭanu 'l-ʿarabīyy)
3) Arab nation (اَلْأُمَّةُ الْعَرَبِيَّةُ al-ummah al-ʿarabīyyah)Arab nation (Arabic: الْأُمَّةُ الْعَرَبِيَّةُ al-ʾummatu 'l-ʿarabīyyah
4) Arab regions (Arabic: أَقَالِيمُ ٱلْعَرَبِ)Arab regions (Arabic: أَقَالِيمُ الْعَرَب ʾaqālīmu 'l-ʿarab)
(Maybe keep the Hamzatu 'l-Waṣli in this one, if it is a direct quote from Al-Maqdisi?)
5) Darija (الدَّارِجَة "everyday/colloquial language")Darija (Arabic: الْدَّارِجَة ad-dāriǧah, “everyday/colloquial [language]”)
6) Aammiyya (ٱلْعَامِيَّة "common language")ʿAmmiyya (Arabic: الْعَامِيَّة al-ʿāmmīyyah, “common [language]”)

Note that I have removed ħarakāt in pausal form, to conform with pronunciation rules, though the diacritics themselves can be added back if that is more in line with Wiki style guidelines for Arabic. I would not suggest adding them to the transcription itself, though, since these are only pronounced within a sentence, and even then only in a high register of Modern Standard Arabic.

I have also removed the Fatħä from the first letter of the first definite article اَلـ, since I am not positive the definite article in modern practice receives a vowel diacritic itself. I have only ever seen (in very posh, linguistic, or religious texts, as well as dictionaries) a Hamzatu 'l-Waṣli used above it. I would be open to using Waṣalāt consistently, too.

Any input is appreciated! –Konanen (talk) 14:02, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Silk Road

[edit]

Trade and commerce between the "Arabic people" and "Non-Arab" caused the Mongol Empire to destroy the Silk Road.
