the term karabin is sometimes translated to as either carbine or rifle in English. While technically in English all HMGs are rifles since their feature is a bored barrel, in Polish the term rifle (strzelba in Polish) is reserved specifically for smoothbore firearms, while all bored barrel arms are referred to as carbines (karabin).

This is seriously untrue - rifle is always karabin, carbine is karabinek, and strzelba is a shotgun. Not all bored arms are referred to as karabins - take pistols (pistolet), or the carbines (karabinek) mentined above. Strzelba is sometimes used in a quite informal way to refer to any two-handed firearm. See google images search for strzelba: http://images.google.pl/images?q=strzelba&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:pl-PL:official&sa=N&tab=wi
