rpm isn't really based on dpkg, but a direct predecessor, pms, which predates dpkg:

"In late 1993, Rik Faith, Doug Hoffman, and Kevin Martin began releasing the first public betas of the BOGUS Linux distribution. BOGUS was notable for the package management system (pms) software that was used with it for installation and uninstallation of all software on an application-by-application basis. Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 1994, the first public betas of Red Hat Commercial Linux were released. Red Hat initially used Red Hat Software Program Packages (RPP) as the basis of its Linux distribution. Like pms, RPP was a system-management tool that allowed for easy installation and uninstallation of applications. In late 1993, Ian Murdock founded the Debian Gnu/Linux distribution. He began seriously developing its dpkg application-management software by the summer of 1994. Like pms and RPP, dpkg made it possible to manage each application on the system."[1] xxxxxxxx

Original author

[edit]

Is the original author of dpkg Ian Murdock or Ian Jackson? Tzafrir (talk) 09:08, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's me, Ian Jackson. You can check this for yourself by downloading the source code. You will find my copyright notices and name all over it.
The Perl version described in the 2nd para of the WP page was mostly written by me too. See the entry for 0.93.10 in Changelog.old in the source tree, which says "dpkg.pl completely rewritten". The previous version by Ian Murdock was a placeholder while we worked on something more sophisticated.Ijackson (talk) 12:56, 5 July 2012 (UTC).[reply]

ipkg

[edit]

ipkg is something elese then dpkg, so it should not redirect here but have its own article. See for example the german wikipedia artikle at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPKG 31.172.106.163 (talk) 07:05, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

same is the case with opkg, which is a decedent of ipkg, so it would make sense to make an own article for those, they share only concepts of dpkg but are not directly related but complete own developments... 31.172.106.163 (talk) 07:17, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
