The article has been edited and some of edits do not match reality: - Eltima Software is the old name of the company, they have rebranded and the company is now called Electronic Team, Inc. - Also, the company is not based in Germany, but in the US. The company's webpage contains the legal address and name: https://www.electronic.us/about-us/

- As for the malware, the problem was solved a long time ago, they wrote about it https://mac.eltima.com/elmedia-player-and-folx-malware-threat-neutralized/

In general, such cases of malware attacks and distribution sometimes happen: https://www.techradar.com/news/vlc-media-player-is-being-hiajcked-to-send-out-malware.
