[edit]Harold William ('Harry') Mallin was an Eton Manor Boys Club veteran, born in Hackney, and employed as a Policeman. He was born on 1st June 1892-06-01 in London anmd died on 8th November 1969 in Lewisham, South London.
Mallin never lost an amateur contest and was British Champion for five years (1919-23). He never turned professional.
He won a gold medal in Boxing at the 1920 Summer Olympics, defeating Canadian boxer George Prud'Homme in the final. At the Paris Olympics in 1924, he figured in one of the most unusual boxing controversies. In a contest with Roger Brousse (FRA), he seemed to have done enough to have won on points. But as soon as the last round had ended, Mallin tried to complain to the referee that he had been bitten in the shoulder. Before he could make himself understood, the bout was awarded to the French boxer on points. An appeal launched by a Swedish official brought forward medical evidence that Mallin had been bitten, and Brousse was disqualified - even though the jury declared that the foul had not been intentional.
The Eton Manor sports ground (Eastway) was demolished last week to make way for London 2012 Olympics sports facilities. Also being lost in the area are a third of Hackney Marshes, a Nature Reserve, a European-standard outdoor international cycle circuit also open as free to use recreational space for local people, a purpose-built housing co-operative of 350 households, and a river which is to be in-filled.
