  • oppose. The word "glass" is used in three different senses: an object made from fused silicon dioxide minerals such as window glass, a drinking cup often made of plastic, and eye glasses which are a pair of lenses. Historically the three senses were related, because they were all made from the same mineral. But now eye "glasses" are usually made of plastic, drinking "glasses" (tumblers) are often made of plastic or metal, and therefore the objects are quite distinct from glassware made from the mineral.
