Other words / hidden meaning?

[edit]

I have a memory of ...

  • Seven, eight - to the garden gate; nine, ten - put them down again (the sticks of five, six).

Also include the cringey internet meme. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amogus cup 1234 (talkcontribs) 15:50, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And also a vague idea that the rhyme was related to Jesus's crucifixion (the sticks making up the cross, the garden in question being the garden of Gethsemane where John has Jesus being arrested.) Does anyone know anything about this or is it just some nonsense that I've dreamt up? Thanks SmokeyTheCat 11:04, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shut the door / Knock at the door

[edit]

Hi, I noticed that lots of people have been trying to change the lyrics of the song. Maybe the lyrics vary between regions, say between the UK and the USA? I don't know any details myself, but it would seem to be a good idea to put this in the article if it's true. Anyone know any details? Its a good point. I don't know either, but I will try to find time to look into it.--SabreBD (talk) 13:37, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing vandalism

[edit]

There was a lot of missed vandalism. I have restored the last good version which has the full version from Opie with citation. If there is the need for a significant alternative version please give a reliable source and offer it as an alternative, not a substitution.

other lyrics

A version sung in canada goes

One two tie your shoes
Three four shut the door/clean the floor
Five six pick up sticks
Seven eight clean your plate
Nine ten do it again(the song is usually repeated like micheal finnegan) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.112.135 (talk) 02:49, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia/popular culture section

[edit]

To avoid any more reverting here, can I suggest that we remove the obviously trivial, source the unsourced and important and turn this into prose, which is the best way of avoiding flyby additions of a pointless nature. This has worked else where, such as Humpty Dumpty.--SabreBD (talk) 10:08, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's the preferred way of action per WP:MISC guideline. Meanwhile, the content that was removed should me made accessible from this talk page. Diego (talk) 18:31, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
