Jan Verveer and recruitment from the Ashanti[edit]

The article Jan Verveer is highly relevant as to how the Dutch raised soldiers for the unit in the early days of its existence. However the agreement between the Dutch and the King of the Ashanti caused considerable disquiet in British diplomatic circles as it was regarded as undermining attempts to suppress the Slave Trade. In a letter from Sir E.C. Disbrowe, the British Ambassador to the Netherlands, to Lord Palmerston, dated 18 September 1840, he states:

Your Lordship is probably aware that a Treaty exists, by which the King of Ashantee furnishes a thousand recruits annually for the Netherlands regiments in Java, these recruits only receiving manumission at Elmina.

Correspondence with the British Commissioners, at Sierra Leone, the Havana, Rio de Janeiro, and Surinam: From May 11th, to December 31st, 1840, inclusive p.242

There are further mentions about Verveer and the agreement in the aforementioned volume.

Notes[edit]

a. All the references given in this footnote are missing (Manuhutu (1987); Steylen (1996: 33–63); van Amersfoort (1982: 101–8); Wittermans (1991). Perhaps the person who inserted them could complete the task? Thanks a lot! Gerry1998 (talk) 05:18, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
