I think it might be good to remove the word "liberal" from the description of Dovlatov's New American magazine. The word has so many meanings it's meaningless unless applied to a political party bearing that name.

BTW... Dovlatov's venture in NY caused quite a stir in Russian emigre circles back around 1980 or so. The magazine was founded as a kind of second option to the venerable Novoye Russkoe Slovo at that time still edited by Sedych. Perhaps NA was liberal in comparison to NRS. It's all a tempest in a teapot now, and so it was then.
