First Draft Format for New London, Connecticut[edit]

As of the 2022 American Community Survey estimates, there were 27,596 people and 11,125 households.[1][2] The population density was 4,921.7 inhabitants per square mile (1,900.3/km2). There were 12,239 housing units at an average density of 2.3 per square mile (0.9/km2).[3][4][2] The racial makeup of the city was 56.2% White, 17.0% Black or African American, 13.3% some other race, 2.3% Asian, and 0.3% Native American or Alaskan Native, with 10.8% from two or more races.[2] Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 29.4% of the population.[2]

Of the 11,125 households, 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.2% had seniors 65 years or older living with them, 27.4% were married couples living together, 10.7% were couples cohabitating, 27.8% had a male householder with no partner present, and 34.1% had a female householder with no partner present.[1] The median household size was 2.12 and the median family size was 2.84.[1]

The age distribution was 16.5% under 18, 19.4% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. The median age was 35.5 years.[5]

The median income for a household was $56,237, with family households having a median income of $65,357 and non-family households $46,119. The per capita income was $30,943.[6][7] Out of the 23,743 population with a determined poverty status, 21.5% were below the poverty line. Further, 36.4% of minors and 11.1% of seniors were below the poverty line.[8]

In the survey, residents self-identified with various ethnic ancestries. People of Irish descent make up 11.0% of the population of the town, followed by Italian at 9.8%, English at 7.3%, German at 5.5%, Caribbean (excluding hispanics) at 3.8%, Polish at 3.4%, French Canadian at 2.5%, American at 1.7%, French at 1.6%, Scottish at 1.5%, Swedish at 1.3%, Russian at 1.2%, Portuguese at 1.1%, Scotch-Irish at 0.8%, Sub-Saharan African at 0.7%, Dutch at 0.6%, Norwegian at 0.5%, and Slovak at 0.5%.[1]
