Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC)[1] is an upcoming shared universe created by Sony Pictures. The universe focuses on supporting characters surrounding Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man.[2]

Marvel Studios is not involved with this films, and does not plan to integrate it with the MCU,[3] but Sony does consider it to be set in "the same world" as MCU films such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, with producer Amy Pascal describing Venom as being "adjunct" to that world. [4]

Development[edit]

Venom[edit]

thumb|upright|right|Venom Poster. Venom will be the first film of this universe and the one that will lay the foundations for its future. Sony Pictures plans for Venom to launch its own franchise.[5] In July 2017, Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, indicated that future Venom films could crossover more with the Spider-Man films.[6] Woody Harrelson revealed in May 2018 that he was expected to have a larger role in a Venom sequel, describing this move as a roll of the dice since he was unable to read a script for the sequel before signing on to the first film.[7] That July, Ruben Fleischer and Tom Hardy both expressed interest in a crossover with Spider-Man, and indicated that Sony was interested in the idea as well;[8] in August, the studio confirmed that it planned to crossover Spider-Man and Venom by saying they "are already in the same universe—so without giving too much away, we are looking forward to the two of them eventually facing off in the future".[9] The same month, Hardy revealed he is signed on for two more Venom films.[10]

Other films[edit]

Black Cat film and Silver Sable film[edit]

In March 2017, it was reported that Sony were planning a film based around the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, with Chris Yost penning the script, and Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal producing.[11] On May 25, Gina Prince-Bythewood was attached to direct the film, now titled Silver & Black.[12] By August 2017, Prince-Bythewood was reported to be revising the script herself. A release date of February 8, 2019 was announced.[13] In February 2018, Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet were announced to be writing the latest draft of the script.[14] On June 1, 2018 Sony removed Silver & Black from its February release with them looking to release the film at a later date.[15] In August, however, the film was split into two separate movies, focusing on the individual characters.[16]

Morbius film[edit]
