Other destinations

[edit]

Understand

[edit]

Of Ghana's ten administrative regions, Volta has the most tourism potential but only an estimated 5% of visitors to Ghana go there. This combined with the lush vegetation, mountains, and coastal plain makes it a great spot for active independent travelers. The cities are cleaner and traffic is nonexistent compared to the streets of Accra and Kumasi. Volta's attractions revolve around community-based ecotourism such as waterfalls, monkey sanctuaries, nature reserves and kente villages (such as Kpetoe).

Talk

[edit]

Most people of the Volta region speak Ewe.

Get in

[edit]

There is a daily flight from Accra to Tamale (~US$90).

Organized tours from Accra or other major destinations can be a convenient and popular way to include some of the Volta Basin highlights in a trip. For independent travellers (and for locals) however, tro-tros (minibuses) cover all main destinations and chartered private cars are affordable and readily available. Although the road network still comes with challenges, roads connecting the towns and communities are being improved and expanded.

If there are Cities and Other destinations listed, they may not all be at usable status or there may not be a valid regional structure and a "Get in" section describing all of the typical ways to get here.
