Etymology
[edit]A clipping of the Ming name 張家口堡/张家口堡 (Zhāngjiākǒubǔ), named for Zhang Wen (張文), who directed its construction in 1429. For the use of 囗, compare Mongolian ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠯᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣalɣan, “gate”), source of the alternate Chinese name 喀拉幹/喀拉干 (Kālāgàn).
