Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *kraŋʔ) : semantic (sun) + phonetic (OC *kraŋ).

Etymology 1

[edit]

Possibly Sino-Tibetan. Probably related to (OC *kraŋs, “mirror”) and (OC *qraŋʔ, “shadow”) (Wang, 1982; Baxter and Sagart, 2014). STEDT compares it to Proto-Kuki-Chin *klaaŋ-I, *klaan-II (to shine; light; bright) and lists (OC *raŋs, “bright”), (OC *laŋ, “sunshine”), (OC *kjaŋ, “emblem; to display”) as additional comparanda.
