From Middle High German ūzganc, from Old High German ūzgang (exit, outgang), from Proto-Germanic *ūtgangaz. Equivalent to aus- +‎ Gang, also analyzable as deverbal from ausgehen. Cognate with Dutch uitgang (exit), English outgang (egress, exit). More at outgang.
