EW's editorial guidelines Updated on December 14, 2023 02:24PM EST The 2024 Golden Globes nominations have kicked off a new era for the embattled awards body. Announced Monday by comedian Cedric the Entertainer and actor Wilmer Valderrama, the Golden Globes nominations marked a monumental affair for awards season, as the first major-network awards show to reveal its year-end nominees for the best movies and TV shows, performances, and technical work in entertainment — and major titles like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, Succession, The Bear, and even Taylor Swift's Eras Tour film emerged with big nominations. On the film side, Greta Gerwig's Barbie blockbuster steamrolled the nominations list just as it did the summer box office, leading the overall motion picture nominees after appearing in nine categories, including Best Picture — Musical or Comedy, Director (Gerwig), Actress — Musical or Comedy (Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), and three nominations in Best Original Song for tunes by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Gosling's "I'm Just Ken." Falling just short of Barbie's total in the ongoing Barbenheimer battle, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer earned eight nominations, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven, and Celine Song's breakout drama Past Lives with five — including a surprise nod for Song in the Best Director category. Still several major contenders were left out of the race, including shocking snubs for Taraji P. Henson for The Color Purple in Best Supporting Actress, while the film itself was also surprisingly left out of the Best Picture — Musical or Comedy nominations list. Among TV nominees, the final season of Succession added nine nominations to its massive series-long haul, with cast members Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, J. Smith Cameron, Alexander Skarsgård, and Alan Ruck all appearing on the Globes' list. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building followed behind Succession with five nominations each, with major stars in both projects — Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Meryl Streep — all earning recognition among the acting set. HBO and Max led the overall TV nominees with 17 network nods, followed by Netflix with 15. Netflix, however, led the film nominations with placements in 13 categories, trailed closely behind by Warner Bros., which pulled in 12. Often considered a predictor — and not direct influencer — of Academy tastes, the Golden Globes nominations regularly match up with each year's eventual Oscars nominations. Last year, only one of the Golden Globes' acting winners — Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once — went on to win at the Oscars, while Everything Everywhere also won Best Picture despite losing to The Banshees of Inisherin in the Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy category at the Globes. After breaking box office records for non-fiction films this year, Swift's Eras Tour film was one of the inaugural Box Office Achievement nominees, appearing among other marquee titles such as Barbie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, and more. The changes were announced in September, months after the Golden Globes revealed in June that, after being acquired by Dick Clark Productions, it would dissolve the historic Hollywood Foreign Press Association group of journalists that typically voted to determine award winners across film and TV categories, on the heels of years of controversy stemming from a 2021 Los Angeles Times exposé that revealed there were no Black journalists among the organization's then-87-person membership. In November, it was revealed that the Globes would move networks to CBS (with a companion livestream on Paramount+) in 2024, after decades of broadcasts on NBC, which hosted its final ceremony in January 2023. The 2024 Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+. See the full list of nominations below. 2024 Golden Globes nominations: See the full list.
