How many Emmys did Breaking Bad win?

With Breaking Bad, series creator Vince Gilligan wanted to turn Mr. Chips into Scarface. Well, along the way, Gilligan's landmark AMC drama won many Emmys and was nominated for even more.

For five glorious years, we watched Walter White (Bryan Cranston) go from a mild-mannered and cancer-stricken science teacher to Heisenberg, a notorious meth dealer, in some of the best written, filmed, and performed episodes to ever air on television. Over the course of its five-season run, the series received 58 Emmy Awards nominations, of which it won 16 Emmys.

The show's greatest triumph came in its final season, which was split in half, and thus earned the series two Outstanding Drama Series wins in 2013 and 2014. While it would take a while for the show to win the night's biggest prize, it still raked in other big wins. Bryan Cranston received the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series statuette four times over the run of the series, and supporting cast members Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn were also awarded multiple times.

But the Emmys honored the show for its many technical aspects, too. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing four times, and garnered multiple directing, writing, and sound mixing nods. Looking back, it's surprising that neither Gilligan nor executive producer Michelle MacLaren ever took home trophies for directing some of the show's best outings, like the pilot, season 3's "One Minute," and the series finale, "Felina."
