It has been over two years since Apple released the third-generation iPhone SE, and rumors continue to surface about a new model.


The latest word comes from The Information, which today reported that Apple plans to release a new iPhone SE with a design similar to the standard iPhone 14 in the spring of 2025. If this rumor is accurate, the iPhone SE would finally gain Face ID and a notch instead of Touch ID and a Home button, along with a larger 6.1-inch display. Other rumored features for the next iPhone SE include a USB-C port and an Action button.

The report said the new iPhone SE will remain a "cheaper" option in the iPhone lineup, as expected. The current iPhone SE starts at $429 in the U.S. with 64GB of storage, with other key features including a 4.7-inch display, A15 Bionic chip, 5G support, a single 12-megapixel rear camera, and a Lightning port.

For those of us who are actually using an iPhone SE, keep it smaller and lighter. Keep it inexpensive. Leave the mmWave for the expensive phones because it doesn't really count in real life. Using a good backlit LCD would be better than using a crappy version of an OLED the way that Google does.

It seems unlikely that they would completely abandon TouchID, which is the only reliable biometric for children under 13, and the only secure biometric for people with identical twins, or relatives that match their FaceID(uncommon). If someone in my household has a fingerprint that matches mine, I can just use another finger, I can't use a different face.

Small phones are getting harder and harder to find. I just want an iPhone that fits in my front pocket and does communication and control of things like my sprinklers, outdoor lighting and security. While I do occasionally use it for music, I don't watch video. I have an iPad and a computer. Just give me a small phone. I too was waiting on the new SE but am find with my SE2 as long as the battery lasts.

I think they will abandon it, unfortunately.
I've already bought a Pixel phone and watch and started using those as daily drivers in anticipation of this.

For sure, Touch ID has many benefits.

(Apologies for the large, bolded fonts. No matter which comment box options I apply, it remains the same. I even copied it into two different note-taking apps — looked fine — even tried tweaking the fonts — and pasted it back here without luck!)

It's not even out yet -- how do you know?

My relatives have several SE's that I bought them
SE 2 and two SE3's

I, of course, have lots of SE1s also

Future SE's could be of use to me or relatives -- just depends what the offerings end up actually being.
These are just rumors -- who knows what actually will release.

If the rumors are true and they can keep it reasonably priced in Europe I’d love to get one for my dad! He just went with a Samsung because it was half the price of a 13. I didn’t even mention the SE to him because it looks so outdated and with just 64GB a smooth migration wasn’t possible anyway. Now we have to use Snapchat instead of FaceTime for videocalling for 4 more years :(

I think the people older than 40 are a tiny bit bigger market for buying new phones than children under 13 and older people like FaceID way better than TouchID.

My concern with it is just losing the home button completely

I have several older relatives that barely get by with their iPhones and the Home button is KEY

It's their lifeboat when lost ... and they get lost a lot.

That could be true, but I think that’ll be mostly about being able to deal with change or not. I got my dad an iPad (his first tablet) without home button (Air 4, I think) and he’s absolutely flying with that thing. If he can go from no experience with tablets to being comfortable without a home button, your relatives can do it too! No offense, dad! 😝

I really worry about it for my relatives -- they are in their late 80's and really struggle with "swipe" type things already.
