How to Join the Voice

Hello! The Georgetown Voice is Georgetown University’s newsmagazine and we want you to join our team! We welcome new staffers at any time of the year and encourage you to join any and all sections you’re interested in.

The Voice is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. We strive to tell all the stories that need to be told, and that is only possible when a wide range of members from different backgrounds come to contribute. The only qualification needed to join our team is the passion to create content in any way you wish. There is no application or minimum story requirement; we simply want the best content you can give us.

In addition to improved writing, editing, teamwork, and research skills, which are integral to any career, those who write for the Voice also gain knowledge of Georgetown University and D.C. In just the last 10 years, Voice staffers have gone on to work full-time at a variety of publications, including The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, Quartz, The New Republic, New York Daily News, In These Times, MarketWatch, Agence France-Presse, The American Prospect, and The AtlanticVoice alumni have gone on to have successful careers in journalism, business, communications, and public service, creating a community of connections for all Voicers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience?

No previous writing, journalism, or design experience is necessary. Editors hold training sessions at the start of each year and help new staffers on an individual basis. We are always looking for those interested in business and multimedia as well.

Do I have to apply?

The Voice doesn’t require an application to join. If you want to join, please email the corresponding editor for the section you are interested in, come to meetings, speak up, volunteer to write and design articles, and get to know your editor.

I just found out about the Voice and I really want to join. Do I have to wait until the end of the semester?

Not at all! Get in touch with the section editor of the section you’re interested in joining, and get started by attending your first meeting. We welcome designers, photographers, savvy businesspeople, copy editors, website gurus, cartoonists, illustrators, podcasters, and others every semester. Have an idea for the Voice? We’d love to hear it.

How to find us

The Voice attends the Council of Advisory Boards (CAB) Fair at the beginning of each semester, where new students have a chance to meet with editors and sign up for email lists for the sections.

We also have at least one open house in our Leavey 424 office at the beginning of every semester, during which students can meet staffers. If you miss the open houses, feel free to email the appropriate section editor at any time of the year. Once you’ve signed up for a section listserv, you can attend a section meeting and start writing. Our office is generally open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, so if you pop by Leavey 424 then (use the elevators near GUAFSCU), there will be someone to talk to about the Voice.

The Voice does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, disability, color, national, or ethnic origin.
