Descriptions

From workshops centered around the creative process (Music Production), connecting to topics covered in the classroom (Music of the Civil Rights Movement), or to our career-based programs (Backstage Pass and Careers in Music), we’re giving students the opportunity to learn about all subjects through music.

History Of Hip Hop

In celebration of the 50 years of Hip Hop, this workshop examines the unique evolution of Hip Hop from its origin to where the genre is today. Highlighting the golden age of Hip Hop, this lesson will provide students with a greater understanding of the struggles and triumphs of the genre.

Music Business Careers

A comprehensive survey and discussion covering a wide range of music careers and opportunities in today’s music industry. Students will also learn tips on how to embark in a career in the industry.

Music Of The Civil Rights

Join the GRAMMY Museum as we celebrate songs of protest and sounds of freedom with Music of the Civil Rights Movement. The workshop discusses the climate of the nation leading up to and during the civil rights movement and showcases both the political and musical leaders who helped change history.

Additionally, students are asked to look at how the popular music of today is used to rally the nation and inspire a fight for change.

Music Production 101

Join the museum’s production workshop designed to familiarize students with the basics of music production. Using a digital audio workstation, students will learn about producing a track on the spot, different careers in the recording industry including the role of the music producer, and the evolution of production from vinyl records to current techniques. Students will be encouraged to create their own beats and, if interested, sign up for our extended after-school programs to dive deeper!

Read To The Rhythm Presented By Drums For Success

Read to the Rhythm is an interactive workshop pairing sight reading and music technology. This workshop invites participant to use aural as well as cognitive skills to play rhythmic figures. Those skills are then transferred to a Recording Program to create an original composition utilizing the information obtained. This fun experience encourages confidence, creativity while inspiring participants to collaborate with others.

Science Of Sound

Join the museum’s Denise Behrens as we learn about the science of sound, including the basics of waves and energy, the characteristics of sound such as loudness, pitch, and timbre, as well as an introduction to common musical instruments. Students will be encouraged to think like scientists as they experiment with sound and acoustics.

Songwriting 101

Students will participate in an interactive workshop where they will be introduced to different songwriting structures by analyzing popular music. Students will then participate in a songwriting exercise and will be encouraged to share their songs.

The Future of Music. VR, AR, Blockchain, NFT’s, 3D-Audio, The Rapidly Emerging Frontiers for Musicians and Songwriters

Join record producer and engineer, Daryl Swan as he discusses and demonstrates the new rapidly emerging frontiers for musicians and songwriters. The workshop will touch on VR, AR, Blockchain, NFT’s, 3D-audio.

FAQs

What if my school cannot afford a trip?

Museum tours are offered at a cost of $12 youth of all backgrounds have the opportunity to learn through music. Please email  [email protected]  for more information.

How far in advance should I schedule a field trip?

Please schedule all field trips that include a workshop no less than 21 days in advance. If your group would like a tour of the Museum only, please schedule 7 days in advance.

What form of payment is accepted when booking a field trip?

The GRAMMY Museum accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa and school checks. Payment must be made in full at least one week prior to your visit.

Are there restrictions on group size?

The GRAMMY Museum asks that there be at least 35 students in your group when booking a workshop. For groups wishing to only tour the Museum, groups are considered 10 or more students. The Museum can accommodate groups of up to 200 students at a time.

What grade levels are most appropriate for a school field trip and/or workshop?

The GRAMMY Museum is perfect for students of all ages. In addition to workshops specifically targeting middle and high school students, we are happy to offer programs specifically for elementary students! For groups interested in a tour only, The GRAMMY Museum is happy to provide scavenger hunts for students of any age.

What does my field trip to the GRAMMY Museum entail?

After being greeted by a GRAMMY Museum representative, all school groups will participate in a self-guided tour of the Museum. Groups can choose to add on a Clive Davis Theater workshop or participate in a Museum- wide scavenger hunt.

What times are available for school tours?

All workshops will take place in the Clive Davis Theater from 11am – 12pm, Monday through Friday. Groups wishing to tour the Museum only may do so between 9:30am – 4pm

May students bring a lunch?

Yes, students may bring sack lunches to eat on Microsoft Square. There are also several dining options on the L.A. LIVE campus.

My school would like to travel to the museum via public transportation, is this possible?

Yes, in addition to Metro bus stops, the GRAMMY Museum is walking distance from the Blue and Red Metro lines.

Is there a parking fee for buses?

The Museum does not offer any parking for buses. Buses may drop-off and pick-up their students at Museum Entrance.

May I visit the GRAMMY Museum prior to coming with my students?

Yes, teachers with valid ID may prepare for a school field trip by coming to the Museum free of charge. Additional guests will be charged full price. For more information about your free tour, please email [email protected].
