Lesley Blanch
Lesley Blanch (1904-2007) was an English writer, historian, artist, and traveller. Her works and journeys focused on Russia and the Middle East. She began her career as an artist, studying painting at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. She later became a journalist, serving as the features editor of British Vogue from 1937 to 1944. Her first book, The Wilder Shores of Love, was published in 1954. Over the course of her life, she wrote 12 books, and a posthumous collection of her memoirs was released in 2015. She was married to Robert Alan Wimberley Bicknell from 1930 to 1941, and to French novelist Romain Gary from 1945 to 1962.
Processing Information
Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.
This collection received a basic level of processing, including rehousing and minimal organization.

Opening Hours
Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
