WHALEN, Charles William, Jr., A Representative from Ohio; born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, July 31, 1920; graduate of Oakwood High School; graduated from University of Dayton with a degree in business administration in 1942, and Harvard University Graduate School of Business in 1946; United States Army, during the Second World War, discharged as first lieutenant in 1946; vice president of the Dayton Dress Co., 1946-1952; professor of economics and chairman of the department, University of Dayton, 1962-1966; Ohio state representative, three terms, 1955-1960; Ohio state senator, two terms, 1961-1966; elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1967-January 3, 1979); was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninety-sixth Congress in 1978; died on June 27, 2011, in Washington, D.C.; interment at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.

Whalen, Jr. papers include WWII enlisted man; later, officer's personal correspondence and papers primarily as quartermaster platoon and company commander in India in 1945 and as Special Service officer, India-Burma theater in 1946. Includes letters, papers on collegiate and theatrical experiences, clippings about Indian civil disturbances, and Army China-Burma-India guidebooks. The collection also includes 291 photographs.

This collection provides a window into local and national history in the 1960s and 1970s through the files of Ohio's 3rd District representative to Congress, Charles W. Whalen, Jr. Although these papers span 1945-2003, the majority are from Whalen's years in the U.S. House of Representatives (1966-1979). The papers include correspondence, news clippings, financial reports, speeches, bills, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and other materials pertaining to Whalen's campaigns, legislative career, and personal life.
