Biography

WYLIE, Chalmers Pangburn, A Representative from Ohio; born in Norwich, Muskingum County, Ohio, November 23, 1920; attended Pataskala public schools, Otterbein College, and Ohio State University; J.D., Harvard Law School, 1948; enlisted in United States Army as a private, attained rank of first lieutenant and served with Thirtieth Infantry Division in Europe during the Second World War, participated in the Normandy invasion; lieutenant colonel in Army Reserves; assistant attorney general of Ohio, 1951-1954; assistant city attorney of Columbus, Ohio, 1949-1950; elected city attorney of Columbus, Ohio, 1953-1956; administrator of Bureau of Workman's Compensation for the State of Ohio in 1957; appointed first assistant to the Governor of Ohio in 1957; elected president of Ohio Municipal League in 1957; practicing attorney, 1959-1968; served three terms in State Legislature of Ohio, 1961-1967; elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1967-January 3, 1993); was not a candidate for renomination in 1992 to the One Hundred Third Congress; practiced law in Columbus until his death there on August 14, 1998; interment in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Lockburne, Ohio.

Papers: ca. 1953-1992, 252 cubic feet. The collection documents the public service career of Chalmers P. Wylie (R-Worthington) as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 15th Ohio Congressional District. First elected in November 1966, Wylie served 26 years in Congress until his retirement in January 1993. Although a few items date from Wylie’s terms in the Ohio General Assembly, the vast majority of the collection consists of the records compiled by the Washington, D.C. and district offices of Congressman Wylie.
