Anti-Doping & The IABA

BANNERS_FINAL

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association works closely with the Anti Doping Unit attached to Sport Ireland. We make our boxers available for testing at all Tournaments. At our Senior Championships 2012, we invited members from the Anti Doping unit along to the weigh-in at our Championship. After the conclusion of the National Senior Championships in 2014. Sport Ireland were invited by IABA to attend and provide an update on anti doping issues to new boxers who qualified to the high performance unit, and also to boxers and coaches who were already present at the unit.

As of December 2018 the IABA currently has 10 IABA members who have been up-skilled by Sport Ireland to the level of Anti-Doping Tutor and are rolling out anti-doping courses at different levels to our members.

Should you wish to request Anti-Doping training to be conducted in your club we have tutors in each province who will be happy to oblige. Please contact our Anti-Doping Officer Larry Morrison who will provide you with the relevant information for your  area, you can email Larry on [email protected]

 (1) IABA’s policy is that doping is contrary to the spirit of sport and every member has a duty to ensure that the sport is free of doping

Membership of the IABA means that all athletes may be selected for testing. Your membership of the IABA commits you to agreeing to testing through IABA membership waiver forms. The members agree to abide by all rules and regulations of the IABA. This also refers to persons under the age of 18 which must be undersigned by a parent or guardian.

All club personnel have a responsibility to ensure that club members are aware of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules and that there is an atmosphere supporting a drug free sport within the club. A complete copy of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules are available at https://www.sportireland.ie/Anti-Doping/2015-Anti-Doping-Rules/

Once you join the IABA and enter a competition you are accepting the fact that you could be drug tested.

(2) This page provides up-to-date information from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Sport Ireland, AIBA, and IABA rules and regulations in the area of doping.

The consequences of not adhering to Anti-Doping rules can be severe for athletes and their support personnel such as coaches and parents, therefore it is critical that any questions/concerns be clarified with either the IABA or Sport Ireland/Irish Sports Council.

(3) Doping is contrary to the spirit of sport. The spirit of sport is the intrinsic value of sport.
The spirit of sport is the celebration of the human spirit, body and mind, and is characterised, amongst other values, by ethics, fair play, honesty, health and respect for, and compliance with, the spirit and letter of rules and laws.

(4) IABA is fully committed to ensuring doping has no place in the sport of boxing. IABA works with Sport Ireland and the AIBA in its anti-doping efforts.

(5) Rules apply to athletes and athlete support personnel.  The Irish Anti-doping Programme seeks to preserve the spirit of sport. By virtue of their participation in IABA activities, members, including minors, agree to abide by the Anti-Doping Rules.

The following sections highlight key areas with regard to Anti-Doping.  IABA advises all members to read and understand the anti-doping rules and to understand your responsibilities under the rules. The consequences of not adhering to Anti-Doping rules can be severe for athletes and their support personnel such as coaches and parents, therefore it is critical that any questions/concerns be clarified with either the IABA or Sport Ireland.

 Irish Anti-Doping Rules

IABA has adapted the Irish Anti-Doping Rules as the anti-doping rules of IABA. Irish Anti Doping Rules were adapted at the IABA National Convention 2009.

Under the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, Sport Ireland carries out drug testing on behalf of IABA

Full details on the Irish Anti-Doping Programme are available at:  https://www.sportireland.ie/Anti-Doping/

International Federation Rules

IABA must also adhere to the rules of our International Federation AIBA.

Full details on the International Federation Anti-Doping Programme are available at: www.aiba.org/doping-free-2/

Athletes/Squad members attending International Events need to check in particular the regulations regarding TUE requirements of the International Federation in relation to competing at International Events, for e.g. if aSport Ireland TUE Certificate of Approval is accepted or if an athlete needs to re-apply to the International Federation etc.  Athletes should verify the rules and regulations with their medical officer/ team manager or Anti-Doping Officer Mr Larry Morrison.

What do members need to know?

In principle any athlete competing in boxing can be tested so each athlete regardless of the level at which they are competing needs to be aware of the anti-doping rules.
