What is a naturalist?

A naturalist is someone who studies the natural world. They spend time outdoors observing plants, animals, and other features of nature. They record their observations and try to learn more about how the natural world works. Naturalists can be professionals who have degrees in biology, ecology, or other natural science fields. But they can also be amateurs who simply have a love of nature.

There are many different things that naturalists can study. Some naturalists focus on a p...

Tips for using the iNaturalist phone apps while in the White Mountains

Hopefully we will have decent wi-fi signal for uploading and identifying observations while at the Crooked Creek field station morning and evening. But that's not guaranteed, and in any case there will be no service or signal while away in the field. For best observing results using the phone app, I recommend the following:

1. Go into the app settings, and set Auto Sync to OFF. That way your phone won't waste battery and resources trying to upload without a sign...

The exceptional nature of the reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata) in its genus, and how we risk extinction of the real animal via complacency given the successful conservation of its hybrids

INTRODUCTION

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata) is an extreme animal, beyond the extreme nature of giraffes generally.

As a distinct species, the reticulated giraffe is the largest-bodied terrestrial animal on Earth that possesses camouflage-colouration at the scale of the whole body.

This thoroughly camouflaging colouration is all the more remarkable, because the reticulated giraffe is the only member of its family that is not subject to the 'xeric pall...

The First Milestone!

So recently the project successfully reached 1000 species, a great surprised for me and my team as it far acceded our expectations. The first observation made in this area was around 6 years ago, and since then we discovered so many new and amazing things, from endangered and rare species, new distributions and even NEWLY discovered species. There are so many more to see and discover, to test new methods of restoration and conservation. To truly see the full potential of a urban biodiver...

The first Bug hunt happened

It was an overcast day … again … following a day of torrential rain, so our expectations weren’t high.
We found more than we expected perhaps, but saw two bees and only one butterfly in the hour we were there.
Hopi g that next time there’s a bit more around,

Interactions in the wood.

Last year we saw MANY Eastern Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa virginica) nesting in the pergola and in the tool shed. They were working the Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), busy, busy, busy! Then came the Sculptured Resin Bees (Megachile sculpturalis). They evicted the Carpenter Bees from the pergola and seemed to gauge out many of the Carpenter Bee galleries. The Carpenter Bees in the tool shed continued along while the Resin Bees took over the pergola. Then later in the season Tiger...

Thanks!

A heartfelt "thank you!" to everyone who participated yesterday! We had pretty good weather, and while I don't yet have a sense of how the day went for others, I had pretty good hunting. I'll be processing and uploading photos today, and will also do what I can to assist with IDs over the next few days.

I'd like to ask a personal favor: if you have any recollections of a particularly good moment during this bioblitz, or any thoughts on why you enjoy bioblitzes generally, could yo...

17/07/24 Bird & Frog survey: Yellingbo

Notes from: a Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater hosted citizen science event.
Our dry winter came to an end this week with flooding creeks, gushing drainage lines and landslips in our region. Woori Yallock Creek's banks had overflowed, but were now just lapping at the top of the bank. We managed to avoid any showers and the weather was mild as 9 of us gathered for our survey. It was 10.8 deg C with no wind, a nice reprieve from recent icy cold days, and wet & windy weather. We r...

Deer Vomit and Sap Yeast

In past years, when the sap would run on our Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) , I would often notice a pinkish tinge would develop on the sap. But, being pre-iNat for me, it was merely an idle curiosity/observation. This spring after we had the tree pruned, one branch dripped copious sap and the pink/orangey stuff showed up again. I researched what this might be and it seems as if it's a complex of organisms with the primary ones ...

Veronica Officinalis Description

Veronica officinalis (Heath Speedwell, Common Speedwell) is a small flower which can be easy overlooked.

V. officinalis grows well in a variety of habitats, despite the common name being the slightly misleading "Heath" Speedwell as the plant does enjoy acid ground but does not grow among thick heathers. Typically the plant can be seen in grasslands, verges- riparian zones.

Associated plants: Gallium saxatile
