En los últiomos años se han documentado algunas, hoy perdidas, otras de las que puede quedar algún vestigio, y otras de las que, al menos, se puede sospechar su participación o su traza en el curso de sus viajes desde Jaén a Cuenca. Este libro pretende exponer los indicios que existen al respecto en su ciudad natal de Alcaraz, el Campo de Montiel, Villarrobledo, San Clemente, El Bonillo, Vianos, El Ballestero, Viveros, Villahermosa, Chinchilla, Huete, Alarcón o Yeste, algunas de las cuales son poco conocidas, aunque tienen a veces estilemas que apuntan al maestro, si bien algunas de ellas comienzan tras su muerte, otras se hayan perdido y de otras tengamos solamente sospechas.

En los años ochenta, las noticias sobre la Inquisición en Sevilla y en otras ciudades castellanas provocará el final de las actividades “judaizantes”, si alguna vez las hubo, y todo un aluvión de autoinculpaciones cuando llega el Santo Oficio a Cuenca y se promulga el edicto de gracia en 1489. Después habrá unos años de relativa calma, pero en 1517, tras el auto de fe de San Clemente, el terror recomienza, con algunos procesos llamativos como los de Mencía López y Juana Sánchez o Hernández, y tras una visita del licenciado Yáñez, inquisidor de Cuenca, a comienzos de 1519, saldrán a relucir numerosos delitos de “herejía” cometidos hacía medio siglo y castigados ahora en procesos como los instruidos contra Isabel de Moya, que sería quemada- o Isabel de Santorcaz, que consiguió aguantar el tormento del agua y de la cuerda y fue reconciliada. Delitos que a menudo no pudieron probarse, porque solo eran fruto de la maledicencia y de los propios métodos de los inquisidores.
El último proceso que se analiza es el de Mari Martínez, “la Tendera”, madre de cinco hijos -de los que uno había sido circuncidado- y en particular del Bachiller de Iniesta, que será su abogado, el de su esposo muerto y el de otros ocho o diez parientes o vecinos difuntos, a los que pretendían exhumar y quemar, pero cuyas sentencias quedarían en suspenso. El mismo bachiller, conocedor de los trucos jurídicos y de las corruptelas del santo tribunal, y persona muy bien relacionada, conseguirá también una condena leve para su anciana madre, tal vez aprovechando el revuelo de las Comunidades, y más tarde un acuerdo por el que la Suprema le conmuta la pena por otra pecuniaria, destinada, en teoría, a sacar a un cautivo de Argel, aunque tiene el aspecto de ser solo un cohecho. Como, muerta, María, el bachiller de Iniesta no pagó lo que había prometido -de hecho, puede decirse que burló al Santo Oficio- se mandó colocar su sambenito en lugar bien visible de la iglesia, pero en eso quedó todo el castigo.
De todos estos casos, salpicados de múltiples noticias respecto a las costumbres, usos, supersticiones propias de los conversos, y muy en especial de las mujeres, que son las que conservan en medida mayor el legado de los antepasados, o las habladurías respecto a las supuestas ceremonias judaicas que tenían lugar en las cuevas y estancias interiores de algunas de sus casas, se ocupa este trabajo, que al tiempo es un reflejo de los medios de vida -sobre todo, recueros, zapateros y sastres- y de las relaciones familiares entre ellos y con los de otros pueblos y ciudades vecinas, como Cuenca, Valencia, San Clemente, Villanueva de la Jara, Albacete, Garcimuñoz y Moya. Al efecto, se incluyen varias genealogías y, para ilustración, cuarenta documentos, a manera de apéndice, que ayudan a entender todas estas historias. Muy en particular la tragedia de aquellos -de aquellas, sobre todo- pobres víctimas de un sistema de pensamiento único, burocrático y frío, que “era una anticipación del totalitarismo moderno”, como ha señalado Joseph Pérez.
Tres asuntos distintos, pero unidos, que se estudian de manera conjunta en el presente artículo.
Precisamente el padre del bachiller Sabuco, Miguel Sabuco “el Viejo”, tintorero de oficio, pero cristiano viejo, contraerá matrimonio con dos o tres mujeres de apellidos “infectos”, como Mari Barrera y Catalina Álvarez, cada una de las cuales tenía, por lo menos, dos abuelas quemadas, creando una familia unida en torno a él, compuesta por tres hijos y al menos cuatro hijas de madres diferentes, que se llaman Sabuco y Barrera hasta bien avanzada la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. Sin embargo, el marido de una de ellas, Gabriel de Vandelvira Llerena, que comienza cambiando sus propios apellidos por el de una supuesta tía suya, María de Quesada, y los de su mujer por el de Peñarrubia, e inventándose abuelos nobles y distinguidos, dará paso a un proceso de falsificación de la genealogía familiar, concluida en el siglo XVII, a base de dinero e influencias políticas. De esta forma, un biznieto del viejo tintorero, el abogado don Gabriel de Pareja y Quesada, que tiene antepasados quemados por herejes cuando menos por tres de sus cuatro costados, conseguirá “probar” su limpieza de sangre, iniciando un proceso ante la Inquisición y el Consejo Real, que no solo nos da noticias sobre él y otros miembros de la familia, sino sobre otras muchas vinculadas con ella en Alcaraz, entre las que no faltan algunas tan ilustres como los Noguerol, Bustamante, Claramonte o Alfaro, que presumen de hidalgas.
De esta misma familia, aunque del matrimonio del abuelo Sabuco con Catalina Álvarez, procedían también el bachiller Sabuco, su hija doña Oliva Sabuco -entre otros nueve más- y los que esta tuvo con Acacio de Buedo: Pablo de Buedo, cura, el dominico Félix, la monja, Catalina, y Francisca y Luisa, que casaron con sendos Peñarrubia, hijosdalgo sobrinos de su madre, la última de las cuales lo sería a su vez del jesuita Jacinto de Pareja. Pero lo más curioso es que la misma Oliva dice ser descendiente de una tal Juana de Peñarrubia, que se supone es -y puede que lo sea- la ¿tercera? mujer del tintorero; pero que desde luego no puede ser su abuela, ni es hija, como dice, del hidalgo Gonzalo Sánchez de Peñarrubia. Un montón de mentiras que solamente buscan apoyar la limpieza de sangre de su hijo, su sobrino y sus nietos y que permite ver, con mayor claridad de lo que es habitual, contrastando sus datos con los libros de actas y bautismos locales, entre otros documentos, la estrategia de manipulación e invención genealógica que han estudiado, entre otros, Cuart Monert, Soria Mesa o Rábade Obradó.
De estos y otros asuntos, de esta y otras familias, como son los Pareja de Alcaraz y Munera, que se dicen hidalgos, pero están enlazados también con los Sabuco-Barrera, los Llerena, los Castillo y Toledo e incluso “La Cochina”, otra hereje quemada que parece haber sido tan famosa como Mari Barrera o Mayor González de Montiel, se ocupa este librillo, breve, pero apretado, que en sus 140 páginas ofrece, además, un apéndice de 15 documentos de interés al respecto y reproduce imágenes de los más llamativos. Es de esperar que sea útil no solamente desde el punto de vista de la Historia de Alcaraz y su entorno (muy en particular, el Campo de Montiel), sino para el estudio del problema converso en general y para resolver, al menos parcialmente, los enigmas que pendientes en torno a los Sabuco y algún otro linaje famoso de Alcaraz.

Aunque, por descontado, el libro no renuncia a seguir las andanzas “militares” de los distintos grupos o “partidas” de maquis, depurando los hechos y las fechas de tergiversaciones que pasan por verdades, y aportando, de paso, nuevas fotografías y documentación del mayor interés, se centra mucho más en las razones y la extracción social de quienes las integran y quienes las apoyan, su dependencia orgánica, su primera expansión desde La Mancha a las sierras de Alcaraz y al Campo de Montiel, su repliegue a esta última comarca, desde marzo de 1947, a partir del revés sufrido en El Salobre, y su rápido fin en unos pocos meses. La represión brutal de la Guardia Civil y otras fuerzas del régimen, la división interna, que el mando comunista intentó superar con un mayor control y autoritarismo, la pérdida de apoyo y popularidad entre la población, son factores que explican el mencionado fin y que son estudiados al final de la primera parte. La segunda pretende cuantificar los datos dentro de lo posible, explicar el papel de las mujeres, explorar el destino posterior de guerrilleros y colaboradores en la tumba, la cárcel o el exilio..., y termina con una amarga reflexión sobre la utilidad de tantos sacrificios, que el pueblo no conoce y las autoridades “democráticas” prefieren ignorar, cuando no silenciar, igual que las franquistas.
