In 2013, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay enacted a law regulating the cannabis market, and since then, an increasing number of users has been registered. Previous reports based on data from other countries link cannabis smokers to worse periodontal health status. The aim of this study is to describe self-reported gingival and periodontal health status and estimate the prevalence of periodontitis among Uruguayan cannabis club members. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of cannabis club members in Uruguay. A survey was used to gather sociodemographic data and information on oral hygiene, use of cannabis and other drugs, and self-reported gingival and periodontal health status. Eight questions validated in Spanish were used to estimate the prevalence of total periodontitis and severe periodontitis, based on two previously implemented predictive models. The survey was completed by 50 people, of whom 68% were male and 78% were in the 20-40 year age range. Base...

Several uprighting mechanics and devices have been used for repositioning tipped molars. "Kissing molars" (KMs) are an uncommon tooth impaction involving 2 severely tipped mandibular molars with their occlusal surfaces positioned crown to crown, with the roots pointing in opposite directions. Orthodontic uprighting of KMs has not been a usual treatment protocol, and it can be a challenging task due to the severe tipping and double impaction, requiring efficient and well-controlled uprighting mechanics. An innovative skeletally anchored cantilever, which uses the torque principle for uprighting tipped molars, is suggested. This torqued cantilever is easy to manufacture, install, and activate; it is a well-known torque that is effective for producing root movement. A successful treatment of symptomatic KMs, involving the first and second molars, was achieved with this cantilever. Thus, clinicians should consider the suggested uprighting mechanics and orthodontic device as a ...

Gingival recession is characterized by the apical migration of the gingival margin, exposing the root surface. Studies have demonstrated several etiological factors for gingival recession such as periodontitis, traumatic toothbrushing, use of oral piercing, and past orthodontic therapy, among others. It might not be possible to identify and quantify the influence of each factor, and gingival recession at some sites may be the result of the combination of these factors. Gingival recession affects individuals at all ages, with prevalence increasing as time passes. The aim of this study was to observe whether there is correlation between gingival thickness and gingival recession. Fifty-five subjects of both genders aged 18-35 years participated in the study. The volunteers were under treatment at the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Buccal gingival thickness was measured on incisors, canines and bicuspids, under anesthesia, following inclusion and exc...

To evaluate the association between sociodemographic factors and self-reported use of mouthwashes in a city in the south of Brazil over a time span of 13 years. The study involves a comparison of two household surveys conducted in 1996 and 2009. Respectively, 850 and 982 households were included in each year. The mother of the family answered to a structured questionnaire to provide sociodemographic data. Self-reported use of mouthwash was evaluated in a binary manner (yes/no). Multivariate Poisson regression models were used to estimate proportion ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). The proportion of mouthwash use increased significantly from 10.8% to 24.2% after 13 years. The probability of using mouthwashes increased more than two times from 1996 to 2009 (PR = 2.25 95% CI 1.80-2.82). Higher probabilities for using mouthwashes were observed in households with higher income (PR = 2.63 95% CI 1.97-3.51) and in those households where the mothers had higher educational ...

To validate quantitative analysis of epithelial cells in oral mucosa smears of smokers and nonsmokers. Sixty samples from the oral mucosa of 10 smokers and 10 nonsmokers were collected from the anatomic sites more frequently affected by oral cancer: lower lip, border of the tongue and floor of the mouth. Slides were stained using Papanicolau and Traut techniques; anucleated squamous, nucleated superficial and intermediate cells were counted. The first 50, the first 100 and all nonoverlapping cells on the slide were counted. To compare percentages of cell types, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used. In the first 50 cells analyzed, there was no significant correlation for anucleated cells in lower lip samples of smokers and border of the tongue samples of nonsmokers; for the other types of cells, a significant correlation was found. For the first 100 cells analyzed, all types of cells in the 3 anatomic sites showed a significant correlation, both in smokers and nonsmokers. T...

Increased overall exposure of the Brazilian population to fluoridated water and fluoridated dentifrices has been identified as the main factor in the reduction of caries prevalence. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the distribution of caries in a group of 437 children ranging from 6 to 12 years of age, residing in a city without a water supply fluoridation system and without a preventive dentistry program, with the aim of orienting future health measures towards improved cost-effectiveness. Clinical examination was performed on all the children, focusing on the indices defs (decayed, extracted, and filled primary dentition surfaces) and DMFS (decayed, missing, and filled permanent dentition surfaces), representing the number of dental surfaces that were either decayed, missing or with extraction indicated, or restored. Analysis of accumulated disease frequency in relation to the population showed that 37% of the children presented 70% of all the tooth disease...

This study was designed to assess the efficacy of an ionic toothbrush on reducing plaque and gingivitis. Twenty first-year dental students were included in the study. Ten individuals were randomly assigned to use either an ionic or a conventional toothbrush. Two periods of 28 days each were used with each brush, with a wash-out period of 14 days. A calibrated examiner used the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (QHI) and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) on six sites per tooth, on all teeth, both pre- and post-brushing. The examiner was unaware of the toothbrush used by the subjects. Means were calculated, and for intra and inter-group comparisons a paired sample t-test was used (alpha = 0.05). On buccal-lingual surfaces, both toothbrushes significantly reduced plaque; there was no statistically significant difference between the two toothbrushes (1.56 and 1.52 for ionic and conventional toothbrushes, respectively). In interdental spaces, an increase of QHI was detected for both brushes, but wit...

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of an ionic and a conventional toothbrush in reducing gingival inflammation measured by gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) volume. Twenty dental students participated in this randomized crossover clinical trial. Quigley-Hein (QH) Plaque Index was assessed in six sites per tooth. GCF was measured in 3 teeth. Two experimental periods of 28 days with a 14-day washout were set. Mean values of GCF were calculated and tested by paired sample t-test. Correlations between % QH = O and alterations in GCF were performed. No significant differences were observed between conventional and ionic toothbrushes respectively neither at baseline (.62 +/- .19 vs. .55 +/- .18) nor at 28 days (.44 +/- .12 vs. .47). A negative correlation (-.33) was detected between the increase in % of QH = O and GCF for both brushes. It may be concluded that the performance of an ionic toothbrush does not differ from that of a conventional brush.

To assess sociodemographic and behavioural risk factors for periodontal attachment loss (PAL) progression after 5 years in an urban sample from south Brazil. At baseline, 1586 subjects, 14 years and older, were derived using a multistage probabilistic sample strategy. At follow-up, 653 of 755 subjects had ≥6 teeth and were included in this analysis. A modified multiple Poisson regression was used to calculate adjusted relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Overall, 247 (37.8%) subjects exhibited PAL progression ≥3 mm in ≥4 teeth. Subjects older than 30 years had approximately two times higher risk of having PAL progression than younger subjects. Subjects with low education had 53% higher risk (RR = 1.53; 95% CI:1.06-2.22) of PAL progression compared to those with high education. A significant interaction between gender and smoking was observed. Among never-smokers, males were 33% more likely (RR = 1.33; 95% CI:1.06-1.66) to experience PAL progression than females. Among smokers, there was 8% increased risk of PAL progression (RR = 1.08; 95% CI:1.01-1.14) for males and 21% (RR = 1.21; 95% CI:1.11-1.33) for females per 10 packyears. Skin colour, socioeconomy, dental care and diabetes were not significantly associated with PAL progression after statistical adjustment. Sociodemographic factors and smoking are independent risk factors for PAL progression in this Brazilian population.

Orthodontic therapy is known to be associated with the development of gingival recession. Several factors may be involved in the causal chain of this outcome, including anatomical and behavioral aspects. Among the anatomical aspects, the dimensions of the mandibular symphysis could play a predisposing role. This study evaluated the relationship between the mandibular symphysis dimensions prior to orthodontic therapy and the development of gingival recessions on the lower incisors and cuspids. Records from 189 orthodontically treated adolescents were evaluated, including radiographs, casts and intra-oral photographs. Symphysis dimensions were assessed by cephalograms. Gingival margin alterations were determined in photographs and cast models. Association between gingival margin alterations and symphysis dimensions was tested by chi-square (α=0.05). Occurrence of gingival recession increased after orthodontic therapy. No association was observed on average of symphysis dimensions and ...

The purpose of this retrospective study was to associate the amount of keratinized gingiva present in adolescents prior to orthodontic treatment to the development of gingival recessions after the end of treatment. The sample consisted of the intra-oral photographs and orthodontic study models from 209 Caucasian patients with a mean age of 11.20 +/- 1.83 years on their initial records and 14.7 +/- 1.8 years on their final records. Patients were either Angle Class I or II and were submitted to non-extraction orthodontic treatment. Gingival recession was evaluated by visual inspection of the lower incisors and canines as seen in the initial and final study models and intra-oral photographs. The amount of recession was quantified using a digital caliper and the observed post-treatment gingival margin alterations were classified as unaltered, coronal migration of the gingival margin or apical migration of the gingival margin. The width of the keratinized gingiva was measured from the mucogingival line to the gingival margin on the pre-treatment photographs. The teeth that developed gingival recession and those that did not have their gingival margin position changed did not differ in relation to the initial amount of keratinized gingiva (3.00 +/- 0.61 and 3.5 +/- 0.86 mm, respectively). Paradoxically, teeth that presented a coronal migration of the gingival margin had a smaller initial amount of keratinized gingiva (2.26 +/- 0.31 mm). The mean amount of initial keratinized gingiva did not predispose lower incisors and canines to gingival recession.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in rats, the role of the systemic use of dexamethasone in the pathogenesis of induced alveolar bone loss. In 26 female Wistar rats, ligatures were placed around the second upper molars, and the contralateral ones served as intra-group controls. Two groups were formed. The test group received 0.5 mg/kg of dexamethasone subcutaneously every third day during thirty days. The control group received the same amount of saline solution. After thirty days, the animals were sacrificed and their maxillae were removed. Sodium hypochlorite was used to prepare the specimens, and the cementum-enamel junction was stained with 1% methylene blue. Morphometric analysis of the alveolar bone loss was performed with standardized digital photographs, and the distance between the cementum-enamel junction and the alveolar bone crest was measured with the software ImageTool 3.0. Intra-examiner calibration revealed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.99. Statistical analysis was performed by paired or independent samplet tests, as appropriate (alpha = 0.05). Dexamethasone increased the mean alveolar bone loss in ligature-induced periodontitis in relation to the control group (0.77 and 0.61 buccally, and 0.65 and 0.56 palatally, respectively). No significant differences were observed intergroups in the teeth without ligatures. In the animal model used here, the use of dexamethasone increased the progression of ligature-induced alveolar bone loss.

The aim of this study was to measure the publication rate of editorial board members in their board journals and to evaluate associated variables. We evaluated the ten highest-ranked journals according to the 5-year impact factor under 'Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine' subject category for 2010, 2011, and 2012. All original research papers with at least one member of the editorial board as author were counted. Final analyses assessed associated variables such as size of the editorial board, number of papers published each year, and each journal's impact factor. Overall, there was an increase in the average number of articles published from 2010 (115.2 ± 52.2) to 2012 (134.7 ± 47.4). The number and percentage of articles published with editorial board members as authors over the three years did not follow the same pattern, with a slight decrease from 2010 to 2011 and an increase in 2012. The number of articles with editorial board members as authors was significantly higher for journals with impact factors ≥4.0. Journals with a higher impact factor and larger editorial board were associated with higher chances of editorial board members publishing in their respective journals. Participation of editorial board members as authors in publishing varies significantly among journals.
