Recent archaeological research have uncovered evidence on the archaeological setting of some hilly sites, most of them of Iron Age times because archaeological finds associated. They have always steep slopes, sometimes placed in isolated summits away from watercourses or arable land. The most striking evidence is their walls, linear dry stone structures 2-3 meters width, raised in very high places, both in absolute and relative altitude. The article provides the mapping of these sites, most of the time never known so far in order to complete the archaeological map resource of León and stimulate research.

Roman military archaeology has experienced a remarkable advance in the Iberian Peninsula during the last decades. During the past few years the roman city of Castro Ventosa has come being object of archaeological activities to be aimed to the valuation of its scientific and cultural virtues. Although the human occupation of the site dates back to Iron Age we deal here with the settlement of Roman times, whose recognisable characteristics are an impressive wall of more of 1.130 m of length and 4 m of thickness, recently discovered and restored. The last campaign of excavations, related here, have uncovered the western door of the wall, which displays common characteristics with other Late Roman cities (Asturica, Legio, Lucus Augusti, Veleia, etc.) from the northern half of Hispania and, mainly, in its northwestern corner.

In 1997 an archeo-anthropological study of the Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro in León was carried out. According to the historical sources, the Pantheon housed 33 individuals belonged to the astur-leonese monarchy, who would have been buried there between XI and XIII centuries. The original disposition of the Pantheon was altered, mainly, in 1809 because the irruption of the Napoleonic troops. The anthropological study has revealed that the mínimum number of individuals almost triples the amount waited, reason why we suppose that after the desecration of the tombs, these was filled with the human remains of other bordering chapels, also desecrated. The positive identification of the rulers has been delayed, as much by the absence of indications of personal character, as by the poor archaeological remains associated at the analyzed sample. The untidy contains of the sarcophagi, as an ossuary, appeared caused by very recent removals. Nevertheless, in spite of the vicissitudes of the osteological remains and, then, the difficulties of this kind of studies, it has been possible to reconstruct and to propose the identification of the skeleton of a young subject, the supposed king Vermudo Il, who died at 19 years old in the battle of Tamarón. The facial reconstruction of this ruler has been made from his skull.

ABSTRACT By means of the presentation of several hillforts, some of them unpublished, existing both in the mountainous area (Cordillera Cantábrica and Macizo Galaico-Leonés), and in the Sedimentary Basin (Submeseta Norte), an attempt is made to approach the varied morphology presented by this type of archaeological sites.

The paper aims on a type of hillforts characterized by its irregular shapes, very adapted to the conditions imposed by the geomorphological framework of its implantation, equipped with numerous works of dry stone fortification, described for the first time in lands of the Northwest of the Zamora province, but that, in the last years, it has been possible to register its presence in Leon, throughout its mountainous orography. According to the scarce signs of material culture that have so far been found in these sites, it is tentatively pointed out that they are related to last Iron Age, probably related to the fortification of their populations because the Roman presence in the most noroccidental part of the Duero Basin.
