This paper describes the Social Networks and Archival Context project, built on a database of merged Encoded Archival Context - Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF) records derived from Encoded Archival Description (EAD) records held by the Library of Congress, the California Digital Library, the Northwest Digital Archives, and Virginia Heritage, combined with information from name authority files from the Library of Congress (Library of Congress Name Authority File), OCLC Research (The Virtual International Authority File), and the Getty Vocabulary Program (Union List of Artist Names). The database merges information from each instance of an individual name found in the EAD resources, along with variant names, biographical notes and their topical descriptions. The SNAC prototype interface makes this information searchable and browseable while retaining links to the various data sources.

GeoCLEF is a new track for CLEF 2005. GeoCLEF was run as a pilot track to evaluate retrieval of multilingual documents with an emphasis on geographic search. Existing evaluation campaigns such as TREC and CLEF do not explicitly evaluate geographical relevance. The aim of GeoCLEF is to provide the necessary framework in which to evaluate GIR systems for search tasks involving both spatial and multilingual aspects. Participants were

Libraries need to support geographic search. The traditional reliance on place names and political jurisdictions needs to be complemented by greater attention to space, using latitude and longitude. If place name authority files are linked to (or developed into) place name gazetteers, spatial coordinates can be added, places can be located in space, similar and multiple place names can be disambiguated, additional spatial relationships can be established (e.g. near, between). Map visualizations used to display geographic aspects of retrieved sets and also provide a more flexible way in to specify the geographic facet in search queries. Analyses show Geographic Search: Catalogs, Gazetteers, and Maps. 2 that library catalog records contain geographic data that remains unused. Recommendations and

ABSTRACT This poster presents multiple information visualization techniques for scientific visualization of the nuclear isotope decay process, including (but not limited to) circle packing and directed graphs. The practical goal of this visualization process is to support nuclear forensics, the identification of the origin of intercepted smuggled nuclear materials.

This paper describes the combined submissions of the Berkeley group for the domain-specific track at CLEF 2005. The data fusion technique being tested is the fusion of multiple probabilistic searches against different XML components using both Logistic Regression (LR) algorithms and a version of the Okapi BM-25 algorithm. We also combine multiple translations of queries in cross-language searching. The second technique analyzed is query enhancement with domain-specific metadata (thesaurus terms). We describe our technique of Entry Vocabulary Modules, which associates query words with thesaurus terms and suggest its use for monolingual as well as bilingual retrieval. Different weighting and merging schemes for adding keywords to queries as well as translation techniques are described.

While the primary INEX test collection is based on a single DTD, it is realistic to assume that most XML collections consist of documents from different sources. This leads to a heterogeneity of syntax, semantics and document genre. In order to cope with the challenges posed by such a diverse environment, the heterogeneous track was offered at INEX 2006. Within this track, we set up a collection consisting of several different and diverse collections. We defined retrieval tasks and identified a set of topics. These are the foundations for future run submissions, relevance assessments and proper evaluation of the proposed methods dealing with a heterogeneous collection.
