Marcella Marongiu
Marcella Marongiu graduated in History of Modern Art at the University of Cagliari; she obtained a postgraduate degree and a PhD at the University of Siena.
She has dedicated herself to the study of the iconography of classical subjects in Renaissance art: the results of this research were the catalogue of the exhibition Il mito di Ganimede prima e dopo Michelangelo (2002), the volume CVRRVS AVRIGA PATERNI. Fetonte nel Rinascimento (2008), various essays, presentations at study days and international conferences, and participation in exhibitions.
At the same time she has been interested in the study of Michelangelo, both with reference to his interest in classical art and his interpretation of mythological subjects, and his influence on 16th-century art; her research has been published in various exhibitions, including: Daniele da Volterra amico di Michelangelo (2003), Giovan Battista Moroni (2004-2005), Vittoria Colonna e Michelangelo (2005), Rinascimenti eccentrici. Dosso Dossi al Castello del Buonconsiglio (2014). She is the author of the recent essay Michelangelo e la "maniera di figure piccole", part of the book of the same name she edited (2019).
At the same time, she is working on the first Michelangelo sources: see, in this regard, her participation to the exhibition Vasari, gli Uffizi e il Duca (Florence 2011), to the Conferences Giorgio Vasari e il cantiere delle Vite del 1550 (Florence 2012) and Intorno a Michelangelo (Arezzo-Florence 2014), to the Seminar on artistic literature La biografia d'artista tra arte e letteratura (Pavia 2013).
She is currently working on a biography of Tommaso de' Cavalieri. She has published several essays on the subject, including: Vasari e le amicizie di Michelangelo dalla Torrentiniana alla Giuntina, attraverso Condivi (2013), Tommaso de' Cavalieri nella Roma di Clemente VII e Paolo III (2013), I disegni di Michelangelo per Tommaso de' Cavalieri (2014), Tommaso de' Cavalieri, Marcello Venusti e i 'cartonetti' di Michelangelo (2016), Tommaso de' Cavalieri (2017); Nuova luce su Michelangelo: oblio e riscoperta di Tommaso de' Cavalieri and Tommaso de' Cavalieri e l'eredità di Daniele da Volterra: Michele Alberti eJacopo Rocchetti nel Palazzo dei Conservatori (2020: published in the Proceedings of the Study Day Tommaso de' Cavalieri arbitro del gusto nella Roma della seconda metà del Cinquecento, held at Palazzo Barberini on 18 December 2019, edited by Barbara Agosti and Marcella Marongiu).
Since 1997 she has worked at the Casa Buonarroti as a curator. She is responsible for the archaeological and artistic heritage, for institutional communication and conference organisation, and for the project for the online catalogue of Michelangelo's drawings (https://www.casabuonarroti.it/ricerca/strumenti-di-ricerca/catalogo-online-dei-disegni-di-michelangelo/).
She has also held lectures and seminars in collaboration with the Universities of Cagliari, Firenze, Siena, Roma Tor Vergata, Genova, Pavia, Liège (Belgium), Villa I Tatti (Harvard University) and University of Pennsylvania (USA).
In the academic year 2010-2011 she was a Fellow at Villa I Tatti (Harvard University).
From 2012 to 2015 she taught the Master of Arts in Museum Studies (Marist College - Lorenzo de' Medici Institute). As part of the courses she was the scientific coordinator of the following exhibitions: Visible Thought: The Artistic Progression of Michelangelo (Florence 2013), Dreams of Marble. Michelangelo's Unfinished Works (Florence 2014), Mortal Veil. Michelangelo and Depictions of the Human Body (Florence 2015).
In the academic year 2020-2021 she taught History of Drawing and Graphics at Università degli Studi di Firenze, Second Cycle Degree in History of Art.
