This is a summary of legal  and administrative history of colonial Nicaragua from 1522 to 1551.  It contains English translations of major Crown legislation, summaries of 110 lawsuits, and 130 reports and relaciones. It is a user´s guide to the Coleccion Somoza, a  17 volume collection, comprised of 10,000 pages,  of transcribed colonial  documents made by Andres Vega Bolaños. It  describes the administrative structure of the colony, its major political disputes, and legal history.  It  should be applicable to other colonies as the law and administrative structure of Nicaragua was the same as in other Hispanic colonies.

This is an example of colonial administrative justice in a case of accused sodomy in Nicaragua in the late 18th century, which was a capital crime,the penalty of which was being burned at  the stake.  The outcome is an example of competent prosecutors and judges having doubts about the veracity of the complaining witness.

Commercial law in Nicaragua and the Reino of Guatemala operated under the great codes Spain, the Siete Partidas, Laws of the indies, Laws of Toro, and Laws of Castilla ( Destos Reinos).  Books  Three and Five of the Partidas proved useful as they contained  both the subtantive law and extensive forms that were commonly used in most transactions.  The other code  that had an impact was the Laws of Toro,that included changes in the laws of inheritance,  fee tails ( mayorazgos), and related.
