Studies in the Crusades and the Latin East This volume focuses on the complex and often overlooked topic of crusading activities and the crusade movement on the fringes of Latin Christendom in the time frame from approximately 1300 to the beginning of the sixteenth century. It covers a period widely considered as a time of significant political, cultural and religious changes in Europe. A period in which Western Christianity was on the one hand still expanding (vide Lithuania and the western Rus and later the Spanish, Portuguese, French and English expansion in the Americas, Africa and SouthEast Asia) and on the other hand facing two mighty opponents: the Ottoman Empire and Muscovy. On its eastern and southeastern frontiers, Latin Christian expansion came to a gradual halt-here, the West was now largely under siege! Alone the political, logistical and ultimately also military feasibility of a large-scale crusade to liberate Jerusalem had now receded into a purely theoretical and practically almost unenforceable far distance. Ranging in scope from the Baltic Sea region to the Balkans and Iberia, this book's nineteen papers explore how these developments influenced the continuation and adaptation of crusading ideas and activities during this later period of crusades.

Available in January 2022: This volume offers a comparative approach to the crusade movement on the frontiers of Latin Christendom in the High Middle Ages, bringing a regional focus to research on these peripheral phenomena. It features several key questions: Which military campaigns were propagated as crusades on the peripheries of the Christian West? What efforts were made to gain recognition for them as crusades and what effects did these have? What value did the crusade movement have for societies at the fines christianitatis? What role did the cruciatae have in strengthening pan-Western sense of togetherness and solidarity, and what role did they have for creation of a crusader and frontier identity? The nineteen papers, ranging in scope from the southern and eastern Baltic regions to Iberia, Egypt and the Balkans, provide new insights into the ways in which crusade rhetoric was reflected in the culture and literature of countries involved in crusading beyond the Holy Land.
The second volume "Infidels, Heretics, Schismatics. Crusading on the Frontiers of Latin Christendom in the Later Middle Ages" is to be published by spring/summer 2022.

The Oder-Neisse line as the German-Polish border is primarily associated with the resolutions of the British, Americans and Soviets, allied against National Socialist Germany, at the conferences in Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam. In Germany, it represents – alongside the division of Germany – the bill that the Germans were forced to pay as the initiators and defeated of the Second World War. In Poland, the repetitively postulated reference to the return to Poland's territorial beginnings in the early Middle Ages has been a widespread anchor of the national collective memory associated with the immediate post-war period and continues to be so up to the present day. However, the idea of moving the Polish border to the west has older roots. The article outlines the genesis and legitimacy of the Oder-Neisse Line as part of an idea put forward by different political and academic circles in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Poland.

The conflict between the State of the Teutonic Order and Poland was fought not only militarily but also diplomatically, through the use of a widespread spy network. Both sides of the conflict were zealously engaged in propaganda in the early fifteenth century in order to convince foreign countries of the righteousness of their own cause. Finally, both
parties sought the negotiation of the Roman-German king-elect Sigismund of Luxemburg who, in his Second Buda Award of July 1414, postponed the conflict resolution to the Council of Constance. As a diplomatic event, the latter offered a welcome stage to both opponents for the propagandistic stylization of their own side as the shield (clypeus, scutum), forewall (antemurale) or bulwark (propugnaculum) etc. of Christendom. Of particular interest here is the theological and legal perspective of the respective deputies on the authority of the Council as an arbitrator for supranational peace and mediation. In the following, the emphasis will be placed upon the negotiating authorities and the mediating actors in the conflict between the Teutonic Order and the kingdom of Poland (and to a lesser extent also the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) from the so-called “Great War” 1409–1411 until the Peace of Lake Melno 1422.

The Nordic Wars of the Early Modern period are among the most decisive and ground-breaking events in the eastern Baltic Sea region. In Livonia, a multi-war conflict for the Dominium maris Baltici flared up between Poland-Lithuania, Sweden, Denmark and, last but not least, the rising Tsardom of Russia, which was to continue intermittently from the mid-sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The numerous disputes between the aforementioned actors were often understood, in the context of increasing confessionalism, as wars of faith: For example, the unitary state of Poland-Lithuania, the self-titled ‘bulwark of Catholicism’, fought against Sweden, the – above all under its King Gustav II Adolf, ‘the Lion of Midnight” – self-titled ‘defender of Protestant freedom’. The focus of this chapter lies above all on the conversion and expansion as well as the continued use of medieval castles and city fortifications, as shown in the examples of the Livonian cities Weißenstein (mod. Paide, Estonia) and Wolmar (mod. Valmiera, Latvia), against the background of the various conflicts between Poland-Lithuania, Sweden and Russia from the sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries.

Like no other conflict, the First World War led to far-reaching changes on the political map of Europe. The collapse of the central states in Novem ber 1918, the Paris Peace Conference and the following 1919 Treaty of Versailles, led to the establishment of many new states in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans on the ruins of the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Russian Empire. The most important of these countries of a regional significance was undoubtedly Poland, which regained its independence after 123 years of absence on European political maps. Even before the Versailles arrangements, during the fights on the fronts, many Polish journalists and independence activists were vigorously involved in the Polish case. This paper analyses the narratives in French constructed by Polish political activists and journalists during the First World War and in the years just after the restitution of the Polish state. Particular attention was given to the rampart rhetoric, widely disseminated in Poland since the Late Middle Ages, which played a central role in several magazines of Polish

Against the backdrop of the Ottoman threat, a very common motif in the diplomatic language of the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period was the topos of a Christian Occident surrounded by innumerable enemies of the faith and protected by lands such as Poland, Hungary, and Livonia, stylized as 'bulwarks of Christianity'. The emergence of this notion and the corresponding ideology was connected with the political and religious situation of the time. The presumed existence of an antemurale implies the existence of a murus, and of an area protected by it. This was believed to be inhabited by members of the Christian community. This western Respublica Christiana – subordinated to the secular power of the Emperor and the spiritual power of the Pope – bordered on heathen, Muslim and schismatic countries to the East. This contribution seeks to take a closer look at the medial diffusion of the East Central and South Eastern European 'bulwark' topoi under the dynasty of the Jagiellonians in the rest of Europe at the threshold of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Relevant single-leaf prints, frontispieces, woodcuts and copperplate engravings representing the respective outpost-countries as antemuralia Christianitatis ensured that the bulwark idea was also spread beyond the circles of humanistic scholars. Thanks to the new technique of printing, numerous writings were circulated (the so called Turcica) which focussed on the Ottoman expansion and on the role which Hungary and Poland in particular had to fulfil in the defence of Latin Christianity. The development of the printing press meant that a far larger public could now be reached, and the Turkish Wars belonged, alongside the Italian Wars of the early sixteenth century, to the military events which awakened the greatest interest among the European public.

Following the death of Emperor Henry VI on September 28th 1197 in Messina, Sicily, a dispute arose over the accession to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire. A large opposition to the Staufer dynasty, centred around the “kingmaker” Adolf I of Altena, the Archbishop of Cologne, refused to accept Frederick, the deceased emperor`s two-year-old son, as successor. As a result of this resistance, Philip, Henry VI’s brother and Duke of Swabia, declared his candidacy for the Roman-German throne. His election by the pro-Staufer party in Mühlhausen on March 8th 1198 finally led to his coronation in Mainz half a year later. Meanwhile, the anti-Staufer group of nobles searched for their own suitable counter-candidate. Before the election in Cologne on June 9th 1198 of Otto of Poitou, the son of the Welf Henry the Lion and the nephew of English king Richard Lionheart, Adolf of Altena looked for other alternatives. Besides Duke Bernhard of Saxony, who relinquished his candidacy fairly early on, another who took on this role was Berthold of Zähringen. The following essay will explore his candidacy.

This contribution presents a further development of some of the findings of a dissertation submitted in 2013. At the centre is the «tracts» conflict between the Teutonic Order and the Kingdom of Poland at the Councils of Constance and Basel and especially the claim that both parties made to being the «bulwark of Christianity». The councils in Constance and Basel represented diplomatic opportunities that offered representatives of both sides a welcome stage on which they could profile themselves as Christianity's scutum, antemurale, propugnaculum. These representatives included Peter von Wormditt, Ardicino della Porta de Novara, Johannes Falkenberg and Andrés Dias de Escobar for the Teutonic Order and Paweł Włodkowic, Jan Lutek, Andrzej Łaskarz and Mikołaj Lasocki for Poland. But what is of principal interest here is the theological and legal appeals they made to the authority of the councils as supranational institutions for peace and mediation.
