In recent years, in response to the increasing public expression of religion (particularly  Islam), the French legal notion of public order has evolved into a vehicle increasingly  used to limit all religious freedom, as evidenced by recent legislation and case law in both  French courts and European Court of Human Rights. The alarming morphing of the idea of public order into a tool which restricts religious expression reflects a governmental will  to create a public social space laïcisized to an extreme which confines expressions of  religion to the private sphere, which itself is not immune to further state restrictions.

Dr H.A Hellyer and Rim-Sarah Alouane, co-convenors of the ‘Religion And International Studies’ [RAIS] working group (https://www.bisa.ac.uk/members/working-groups/rais) at the British International Studies Association [BISA] invite paper proposals on a wide range of topics related to the interchange between Religion and International Studies, as part of the 2021 BISA Conference in June 2021. (Further details about the conference are available at https://conference.bisa.ac.uk/).

The deadline for applications has been exceptionally set for 22nd of January 2021, later than other BISA panel deadlines, as this is the inaugural panel of RAIS, which was recently formed. Applications received after this date may not be considered.

BISA conference 2021 is committed to ensuring the conference is a welcoming, supportive and intellectually stimulating place for all and intend to use the fully virtual setup of 2021 to ensure the conference is BISA's most diverse, inclusive and accessible to date. Please note that both members and non-members of BISA are warmly invited to submit proposals.
