A las dificultades inherentes a toda investigación histórica se une la existencia de dos versiones sobre los mismos hechos, fruto de la existencia de dos tradiciones diferentes. A la primera versión, escrita en lengua latina o romance, la denominaré hispana porque ha sido la tradicionalmente transmitida por los historiadores de la península Ibérica. A la segunda, escrita en lengua árabe, la llamaré magrebí porque es la que corre por los documentos y libros del norte de África. Se podría decir que la existencia de dos versiones diferentes debería de ser un motivo de satisfacción para los estudiosos, porque de esta forma, confrontando las dos, tendríamos más posibilidades de acercarnos a la verdad. Sin embargo, no son pequeños detalles los que separan las dos versiones, sino que ambas son totalmente incompatibles entre sí. Podemos adelantar los resultados de comparar las dos versiones para tenerlos presente a medida que avancemos en la lectura de este artículo. La versión hispana plantea la colaboración entre la taifa andalusí sevillana y Alfonso VI para derrotar a los moros. Al-Mutamid intentará recobrar el esplendor de la época Omeya. Su enemigo no son los cristianos, sino los moros africanos causantes de todos los males que sucedían en al-Andalus. Por el contrario, la versión magrebí plantea en su ideología una lucha sin cuartel entre el islam y la cristiandad. Todos los musulmanes que habitan en al-Andalus, ya sean andalusíes o moros, se unen en la lucha contra los cristianos. La metodología que voy a emplear en este pequeño ensayo es exponer un breve resumen de la versión hispana sacada de las principales crónicas de la época. En los temas en que difieren las dos versiones pondré una letra mayúscula entre paréntesis (A, B y C) que luego desarrollaré más extensamente. Exposición resumida de los acontecimientos.-La decadencia de al-Andalus ya está implícita en los últimos años del Califato de Abderramán III. La lucha contra los fatimíes por el control del Mediterráneo y de las rutas del oro africano lleva al gobierno cordobés a buscar alianzas con tribus bereberes. Esto hace que muchos de estos guerreros con sus mandos entren a formar parte de los ejércitos cordobeses. Almanzor los utilizará en sus razias contra los cristianos del norte de la península. Estos ejércitos de mercenarios tendrán un papel decisivo y serán una de las causas de la desaparición del Califato de Córdoba. Cuando esto se produce, se forman lo que se conoce como los reinos de taifas. Los historiadores clasifican estos reinos según sea la bandería de los dirigentes que los gobiernan. Tenemos así taifas árabes, taifas bereberes y taifas eslavas. Notemos que en esta clasificación tradicional no aparecen ni los hispanos ni los andalusíes. Es una rémora de nuestra historiografía. En la historiografía medieval española, se utilizan las frases ejércitos árabes, arquitectura árabe, etc., para escribir sobre el enemigo, a pesar de que sabemos que, aunque aceptáramos el hecho de la denominada invasión árabe, estos serían una minoría en al-Andalus.
