The article considers the works of pre-revolutionary authors using the materials of the census of church property in 1701– 1703. The main trends in the development of research in this area are traced. It shows how the scientific process was restored after a half-century gap associated with the revolutionary upheavals of the early 20th century. Observations are made about the regularities of the development of historical science and the influence of the processes taking place in society on it.

S. Shamin The advance of Russia to the south in the XVI-XVII centuries: the development of the "Pole" Annotation: The study showed that in the XVI-XVII centuries the process of development of the southern territories was at the very initial stage. The Russian frontier fully preserved its unique face and confl ict of interests in relations with the central government. The tasks of uniting vast territories and many people into a single cultural, economic and social space remained a matter of the distant future. All this was of great importance for the formation of the cultural image of Russians, as well as other peoples of Russia and Ukraine.

THE SEIMENI OF THE CRIMEAN KHANATE DURING THE RUSSIAN-TURKISH WAR OF 1686–1700
The article discusses the history of the elite unit of the Crimean khans – Seimeni during the Russian-Turkish War of 1686–1700. The emergence and development of these units in the Crimean Khanate, one of the vassals of the Ottoman Empire during the 17th century, testified to the increasing role of mobile infantry armed with firearms in current conflicts. Some new facts concerning the number, the monetary allowance, recruitment and military organization of Seimeni are introduced into scientific circulation.

The Legend of the Wandering Jew in a Russian Translation of 1663 The Russian National Library in St. Petersburg holds a unique manuscript version of the famous tale of Ahasverus, the "Wandering Jew". This copy was probably made in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, whereas the translation itself - according to a date indicated at the beginning of the copy - was produced in 1663, most probably by a professional translator at the Diplomatic Chancery in Moscow. The text is preserved in a volume previously owned by P. M. Stroev (the modern shelfmark is Pogodin 1565). The Ahasverus manuscript was mentioned by A. I. Sobolevskij in 1903, and the text was edited for the first time by V. P. Adrianova in 1915 - an edition unfortunately marred by a number of serious mistakes. Therefore we decided to publish a new transcription. One of the important questions discussed is, obviously, the source language for the Russian translation. Whereas V. P. Adrianova was convinced ...

the article analyzes the events of one of the largest campaigns of the Russian-Turkish war of 1686-1700the defense of the Dnieper towns in 1697. During the campaign, for the entire time of the confl ict the Ottoman Empire sent the largest contingents of both its own and allied troops to participate in hostilities. Despite the overwhelming advantage of the Turkish and Tatar troops, the Russian garrisons managed to defend the key fortifi ed points of the defense line-the fortresses of Tavan and Kazykermen. The research is based on a wide base of sources, both published and for the fi rst time introduced into scientifi c circulation.

The article is devoted to translators at the Posol’skii Prikaz (the Ambassadorial Chancery). It covers the origin of
translators and their number in the specified period, their proficiency in foreign languages, participation in various types
of work (translations of diplomatic documents, newspapers, books, etc.) during the last decades of the 17th century.
It shows the dynamic of changes in the quantity of translators in relation to the transformation of the governmental
domestic and foreign policy. The analysis was carried out for both the employees of the central department who worked
in the capital of the Moscow State, and for those who were sent to the border cities – Arkhangelsk, Novgorod, Pskov,
Smolensk, and Azov. The authors come to the conclusion that the leaders of the country in the 1680s – 1690s adhered to
the policy of austerity and restrained the growth of staff translators of the Posol’skii Prikaz. This led to an acute shortage
of translators even in the most important diplomatic areas.

THE UNKNOWN TRANSLATION  OF THE LETTER OF РOРE CLEMENT X  IN RUSSIAN STATE ARCHIVE OF ANCIENT ACTS Тhe article reviews the manuscript of the letter of Pope Clement X dated 5 November 1672 and translated from Latin into Russian in Moscow Posolskij prikaz (Russian state archive of ancient acts, 155, 1, 1672, № 7). Тhe Russian version of this document remained unknown to linguists and historians for a long time because the pages had been mixed. Тhе right order of pages is reconstructed by the authors. The edition of the whole Russian text is included. The manuscript сорy made by three persons is analysed in the introduction in the field of accentology, punctuation, and lexicology. The individual features of each script are also discussed. The Russian version of the papal letter is an important lexicological source containing words unknown to lexicographic sources, such as prisvyazati ‘to unite’, odalěti ‘to remove’, zashchitstvovati ‘to defend’. The foreign borrowings are of particular interest, for example polakhi ‘the Poles’, yubiley ‘the jubilee in Rome’ еtc.

“EUROPA REGINA” AND “THE EUROPEAN COUNTRY KINGS”: A MAP OF THE TIMES OF EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I IN THE MOSCOW STATE AT THE TURN OF THE 15th AND 16th CENTURIES
The study is dedicated to a short text “The European Country Kings” which is well-known in the Russian manuscripts since the beginning of the 16th century. The author compares the essay with the inscriptions on the anthropomorphic maps “Europa Regina” (“Queen Europe”), published in 1537 and 1587. A comparison of Russian text with European maps shows that the “Europa Regina” edition issued in 1537 was not the first. It was preceded by a map created at the turn of the 15th – 16th centuries during the reign of Emperor Maximilian I.

This  article  considers  an  unstudied  episode  in  the  life  of  Andrei  Denisovich  Vinius,  a  Dutch  entrepreneur  and  founder  of  the  first  metallurgical  plant  in  Russia.  Previously,  researchers  had  no  information  about  Vinius’  business  activities connected with the establishment and management of the metallurgical
plant.  The  sources  available  to  researchers  did  not  prove  the  hypothesis  that  the Dutch merchant continued his trading activity. Such data can be found among Prikaz records reflecting results of trials. Andrei Vinius was a defendant in these cases. Documents found by the authors in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts  help  conclude  that  Vinius  did  not  stop  his  trading  activity  even  when  his  major efforts were aimed at founding a metallurgical plant near Tula. However the period between 1630 and 1640 was a hard time for the Dutch entrepreneur. It  was  characterised  by  a  tense  situation  in  the  international  arena,  where  his  plant had to compete with firearms imported from Europe. In the late 1630s and early 1640s, Muscovy was facing a possible conflict with the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate. As a result, the country had to quickly fortify its borders, build new protective walls, and increase the garrisons in the towns of the steppe zones, which required the mass production of small arms. Due to the peculiarities of the Russian domestic resource market, Vinius’ arms were nearly a third more expensive compared to small arms imported from Sweden and Germany. Vinius’ trading activity led to losses and conflicts with the Russian law. Trying to make up  for  the  losses  incurred,  he  started  dealing  in  tobacco,  which  was  prohibited  in  Russia.  All  these  factors  gradually  made  Vinius  stop  his  commercial  activity  and join the Russian civil service. His legal conflict with Nazary Chisty, a clerk of the State Prikaz, and their later reconciliation also allowed Vinius to establish useful connections in government circles

2016. № 2 (20). С. 136–151.
The article focuses on the «German potekhi» (entertaiments), played in the Muscovite court during
the 1630s. These entertainments resembled circus performances. They were based on rope acrobatics. The
principal changes leading to a new phenomenon in the Russian court culture appeared in the turn of 1634 and
1635. From this time a small acrobatic troupe began to develop, the backbone was formed with two German
artist and five of their Russian pupils. The development of the «German entertaiments» was connected with
the youth of Tsarevich Aleksei Mikhailovich. First he looked at poteshniki (entertainers), then apprenticed
three of his nakry players to the foreign artists, dressed them together with himself, his younger brother and
the stolniks in the German comic costume. This period ended because of the tragic events in the life of the
royal family in 1639: in January died Tsarevich Ivan, five years old, and in March died newborn Tsarevich
Vasilii. To this the Empress’s health deteriorated. At the end of mourning the «German entertaiments» were
not renewed. The author concludes in pointing out the similarity of «German entertaiments» from 1630s
with the performances that were played at the court of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich in early 1672: no German
actors on stage were professionals; the people close to Aleksei Mikhailovich played a significant role in the
organization of the performances; the shows were based on the plastic actions that were understood without
the help of an interpreter; the Tsar and his sons was shown for the audience. These performances have become
an important preparatory step to the production of the first theatrical performance ― The Play of Artaxerxes
(Ahasuerus; Artakserksovo deistvo).

In the centuries of conflict between the Ottoman Empire and various European states, polemical manuscripts, pamphlets and books on Turkish topics were common in Europe. Some texts reappeared at intervals, adapted to different circumstances. A certain category consisted of texts that were allegedly written by the Ottoman sultan himself. This paper deals with one such text, which proclaims to be an instruction from the sultan to his subjects on ceremonies and processions to be performed in order to please Allah. Variations of this text appeared in 1686–87, 1697–98 and 1716–17, in manuscripts and printed pamphlets in different languages. It was translated into Russian twice: in 1697 and 1716. The 1697 translation was only recently discovered among documents from Peter I’s Grand Embassy. This paper examines the textual relationships between the versions that appeared in different decades and their historical contexts, and contains an edition of the previously unpublished 1697 Russian translation.

This collective monograph is the first scholarly study of the Russo-Turkish War of 1686–
1700, the least-known and most-protracted of Russia’s wars against the Sublime Porte and the
Crimean khanate. The authors’ systematic investigation of the course of military events during
the entirety of this 14-year-long conflict interweaves analyses of the largest and best studied
Crimean (1687–1689) and Azov (1695–1696) campaigns. It also brings to light the heretofore
unacknowledged importance of the campaign of 1697, which was Russia’s most serious
contribution as a member of the international coalition known as the Holy League. The
work also deals with the mechanisms of military planning, the evolution of both internal and
external ideology, and the influence of war on the relations between Moscow and dependent
political formations (such Caucasian tribal polities, the Ukrainian Hetmanate, and the Kalmyk
Horde). One of the central tasks of the study is to show the role of the war in the process of
creating the political and ideological bases of Russian foreign policy in the era of Peter the
Great.

This interdisciplinary study deals with an unusual German-Russian cultural encounter: a group of strolling German artists who crossed the border of Russia in the Summer of the year 1644, on an extensive tour that had brought them to the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and the Baltic littoral (Reval and Dorpat). In Pleskau/Pskov, in the north-west part of the Muscovite state, they asked for permission to stay for some time, apparently in order to entertain the inhabitants and earn some money.
Our primary focus is on a broadside – an advertisement for a group of tightrope walk - ers, illustrated with a copper etching – that has survived in the Russian State Archives of Ancient Documents (RGADA) in Moscow. The anonymous and undated broadside provides a great deal of indirect information about the performers, both through its large hand-coloured copper illustration and a detailed explanatory text in German. Thanks to the fact that we also found some additional documents, kept at the same archive – albeit not together with the advertisement – that we could link together with the broadside, we were in the lucky situation of being able to identify the strolling troupe and date the broad - side to the year 1644 or a few years earlier. The principal of the troupe, Simon Dannenfels, was born in Strassburg in 1594; the other performers were his own children and three additional acrobats, mentioned by name in the Russian documents, although we were not able to identify them further. In the article, Dannenfels’ life as a strolling artist is described on the basis of both published research and primary archival documents, above all from Strassburg, Stockholm, and Moscow. The Russian documents show that the German troupe was not welcome in Muscovy. As soon as the letter by the Pskov authorities, asking for advice on handling these foreigners, had been delivered to the tsar, the Russian court ordered that the comedians should be expelled from Muscovite territory. The documents do not tell us whether the troupe had any opportunities to show their artistic talents during the time it took for the Pskov authorities’ letter to be sent to Moscow and the tsar’s answer to be sent back to Pskov (about one month). Although foreign artists had been employed at the tsars’ courts prior to Dannenfels, the Strassburg-born artist and his troupe were the first for whom we can show that they came to the country on their own initiative, without any invitation by the Russian authorities whatsoever.
The article is relevant not only for the field of German and Russian cultural history, but also for the study of art history and more particularly the history of printed broadsides that were used as advertisements for artistic programmes. The ‘Moscow’ broadside is in all likelihood not only a unique copy of the Dannenfels troupe’s advertisement, but possibly also the oldest dated (or datable) broadside with a copper etching from the German-speaking territories that advertises an artistic performance.

English Abstract.
This paper deals with the kuranty (digests of foreign newspapers) during the 1720s. The authors' main focus is on the question how the translators of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs chose the material for translation among the newspapers that arrived with the mail. The translation technique used for translating the foreign newspapers is analyzed. One of the conclusions is that the translators marked on the originals when they first read through the newspapers what needed to be translated, then they made the translations; the heads of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs decided, which of the translated articles had to be met by the Russian diplomats. During the 1720s – contrary to the situation during the seventeenth century – the kuranty were not only a means to learn about foreign events, but now they also had the function to control the European newspapers. A comparison of the translation techniques applied for the “old” and the “new” kuranty shows that these techniques have not changed a lot since the 1670s: both here and there the translators left alone information that was felt as being less relevant; for instance, they left out whole sentences, if they were of low importance for the Russian rulers, and so forth. It is true that the concrete newspaper articles which we analyzed in this paper, comparing them with their immediate (German) originals, are, in a way, more literal than the kuranty produced during the 1660s–1670s: almost every single word of the original German text has an equivalent in the translation. Generally speaking, the professional level of the translators – which was quite high already in the 1660s–1670s – had improved still more during the reign of Peter I.
