4 Greetings FROM THE PRESIDENT

The music world, like all of our society, is deeply impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic: physical distancing, travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines have become our daily life. Music, as a performing art, is particularly affected by this situation because physical contact and exchanges are just so indispensable in making music. Young musicians are paying a high price for this situation. They are often deprived of concerts, income and career perspectives. International music competitions have had to deal with this unprecedent situation in 2020: they had to adapt by cancelling, postponing or modifying their events. They have been incredibly inventive and resilient, proposing new experiences and exploring new ways of sharing and living music; they have strived to support their young laureates as much as possible.

The WFIMC is proud of its members all around the world. It encourages them to do the utmost possible for their young musicians, but also to anticipate the future of music competitions. The WFIMC has proven its utility and commitment in providing, throughout such difficult times, the only global network of international music competitions where one can share one’s experiences and learn from one another. The WFIMC is proud to have represented our five continents’ leading international music competitions for over 60 years and will continue providing them with all the adequate support and legitimacy.

5 greetings FROM THE Secretary General

Dear Friends and Colleagues, After a year of cancellations and postponements, of waiting and hoping, of missed opportunities and lost funding for most of us, we are warily awaiting 2021. Many members have taken on the challenge and have developed online platforms; have created hybrid projects or have worked with partners around the world to make their competitions happen even under the most adverse circumstances, but most of us are waiting for the waves of the pandemic to subside and for the return of some sort of normality. Yet, even under the most optimistic forcast, it will not be an easy year. Many countries will remain closed and travel will still be restricted for months. We will have to be flexible in many ways. Plans may have to be changed at short notice. Laureates’ concert tours that included international travel might be less likely to happen than longer domestic tours. Audience size will vary greatly from country to country. And much of our communication will remain digital rather than in person.

In the end, there is reason for optimism. Interest in music competitions, in live performances and in classical music in general, is growing. New media and digital platforms may have taken away some live performances, but they have also created a new interest and great demand for music. We realize how much we need the performing arts, and how poor our life becomes without them. 2021 will see a great many competitions all around the world. This yearbook will guide you through the countless dates and disciplines of classical music and jazz: soloists, chamber musicians, conductors and composers. Much to look forward! Sincerely yours

7 ABOUT US MISSION The World Federation of International Music Competitions contributes to the vibrancy of the music world by representing leading international music competitions and supporting them with valuable services and guidelines.

ORGANISATION Founded in 1957, the World Federation of International Music Competitions is a global network of internationally recognized organisations dedicated to identifying the most promising young talents in music. While providing a forum for dialogue and exchanges between its members, WFIMC gives guidelines, aiming for artistic excellence, integrity and fairness, and thus sets a globally recognized standard. The Federation is comprised of over 110 international music competitions and other institutions serving young musicians on their path to an international career. The Federation is a member of the International Music Council of UNESCO in Paris. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the Federation is supported by the Department of Social Cohesion of the Canton of Geneva.

INTRODUCING: TISA HO

Chair of the International Society of the Performing Arts (ISPA) You live in Hong Kong, which has some of the strictest entry restrictions and quarantine regulations in the world. Before the pandemic, you have been travelling internationally on a regular basis. How has Covid-19 changed your life? I have been reading a lot more, listening to more music because of being at home longer, and spending more time online. Because no travel is involved, it has been possible to participation at more international gatherings. With colleagues in other parts of the world, I have felt a strong desire to reach out and connect across the distances that separate us. The other big adjustment was to closed venues, which has resulted in a far greater awareness of how important performances are in our lives. Zoom and other online meeting services have become commonplace. How much do you think our way of interacting and communicating will return to pre-corona ways and how much of the new normal will stay? Online interaction is likely to be here to stay. It was already steadily growing in importance. The pandemic gave new impetus to this trend. I believe that we will still need to gather, but may choose to do so more judiciously. Do you see a future for International touring of artists, orchestras, opera ensembles? Yes, I am sure that touring will continue. There is nothing like being at a live performance. This is not only to experience what is happening on stage, but also to share the experience with others in the audience. There is something deeply communal about being in a performance; it cannot be matched by anything online, even with audience participation and inter-activity. Perhaps with fewer people travelling to enjoy performances elsewhere, the need for touring could be even greater. Has the absence of international guest artists helped local musicians at all? Do audiences concentrate more on “their own” rather than cultivating a fan-culture for international stars? I see that many musicians and ensembles have strong local support. For many, a strong connection to the communities in which they are normally based is a matter of survival. At the same time, international ‘stars’ will always attract a different kind of

attention. If we take Hong Kong as an example, the Hong Kong Phil, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta all enjoy keen community support. The audience that enjoys their performances are also avid audiences for the visiting orchestras presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival. I believe that great performances stimulate interest and generate the desire for more, not less. What will be your first international trip after the pandemic? The first trip will be to Singapore to visit family and indulge in the fabulous food there.

Tisa Ho is Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, one of the most important arts festivals in Asia with a strong 48-year track record of presenting some of the world’s top artists in all genres of the performing arts covering the full range from classical to contemporary, supported by extensive educational, outreach and community engagement activities and events. During her tenure, the Festival has presented large scale international productions, embarked on a programme of exploring new, unconventional venues to extend the Festival experience, and enriched its PLUS programmes of workshops, discussions, ancillary presentations. In 2019, the Festival launched “No Limits” a new series to promote inclusiveness in the arts. Tisa Ho was born in China, grew up in Hong Kong and trained in arts management at the City University, London. She has lived in France and in Singapore, where her portfolios included programming Singapore International Arts Festival, managing the Singapore Symphony and Victoria Concert Hall and planning the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. She currently chairs the Board of the International Society for the Performing Arts, a global network of over 500 arts leaders; and is on the international faculty of the Academy of La Scala in Milan Italy, and the Lisbon Consortium in Portugal. She was an invited speaker at Singapore’s Culture Academy, and serves on the panel of judges for the NOW festival in Shanghai. In 2019, Tisa Ho was awarded the Degree of Doctor of the Griffith University in Australia; in 2020, she was elected to the China Literature and Art Critics Association.

20 2021 General Assembly Reggio Emilia Situated in the heart of the Emilia Romagna region, in a valley known around the world for its cuisine and opera, Reggio Emilia is a city brimming with history, tradition, culture and art. Its culinary heritage has been passed down through the generations. The home of Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional balsamic vinegar, it is a place where its inhabitants’ industriousness means industrial excellence, where hospitality and generosity are a way of life. Culture is at the very heart of the city: its historic buildings and museums house permanent exhibitions and collections. Squares, churches, the Basilica della Ghiara, arcades, courtyards, the San Pietro cloisters, are brought to life by the cultural events they hold year round.

The city’s education system is known throughout the world as The Reggio Emilia approach. Reggio is the city of the three Theatres, all facing onto the same square, and the city of quartets. Teatro Municipale Valli, one of the most beautiful theatres in Italy and one of the best preserved, is the main one. Located in the former Citadel, it was built between 1852 and 1857. In this theatre Luciano Pavarotti made his debut in La Bohème April 29, 1961.

City of Theatres The city’s cultural driving force is the Fondazione I Teatri Reggio Emilia, mainly focused on opera, classical concert and ballet, but also on drama, contemporary performance and music. It offers more than 700 events for 130,000 audience members every year, and over the years has welcomed the greatest artists on the international scene, such as Claudio Abbado, Maurizio Pollini, Bob Wilson, Graham Vick, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and many others. The autumn Festival Aperto focuses on the contemporary through the performing arts.

Over the years it has welcomed artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christian Boltanski, Dimitris Papaioannou, Kronos Quartet, Romeo Castellucci and many more. Reggio Emilia is also home to the Collezione Maramotti of the Max Mara group, the main partner of the Premio Borciani and of the theatre itself, which holds commissioned site specific performances by renowned choreographers in its exhibition spaces. Each year more than forty thousand children, teachers and families take part in the Educational project.

PREMIO PAOLO BORCIANI 12th International String Quartet Competition The “Premio Paolo Borciani” International String Quartet Competition was established by the Reggio Emilia City Council in 1987 in honour of Paolo Borciani (1922-1985), founder and leader of Quartetto Italiano, the ensemble acclaimed by critic Virgil Thomson as “undoubtedly the best string quartet the century has ever known”, following a memorable concert in New York in November, 1951. The Prize is awarded to the winner of one of the most selective competitions in its sector and is held every three years at Teatro Municipale Romolo Valli.

Previous winners include the Keller, Artemis, Kuss, Pavel Haas, Bennewitz, and Kelemen Quartets, whose careers were launched by this very prize. The competition rounds include a contemporary piece or a world premiere performance. Composers from past events include: Marco Stroppa (1994), Luciano Berio (1997), Salvatore Sciarrino (2000), Wolfgang Rihm (2002), Peter Maxwell Davies (2005), Giovanni Sollima (2008), Giya Kancheli (2011), Thomas Adès (2014). The 2021 commission has been entrusted to Toshio Hosokawa.

The Girolamo Fantini International Trumpet Competition Rome, Italy

Tell us a little about your competition’s history and what makes it special.

Which countries are most strongly represented among your competitors?

The “Girolamo Fantini” International Trumpet Competition has been founded by Giuliano Sommerhalder, Principal Trumpet at the Rotterdam Philharmonic and trumpet teacher at AIMART Academy in Rome, and Edda Silvestri, Director of AIMART, in 2016. The first edition took place in 2017, the second in 2019 and the next one was scheduled in early 2021 but had to be postponed to a later date. The top priority of the competition is absolute transparency on the voting process thanks to some very specific extra rules. What makes it special compared to most other trumpet competitions is that it seeks to encourage and promote young artists to offer a broader spectrum than just “mainstream” classical solo repertoire. More specifically, the second round has four elective categories: Historical/Baroque, Jazz, Orchestral and “Freestyle”, the latter encouraging any unique performance, including improvised, acted, self-composed, but also, for the more conservative ones, “regular” solo repertoire.

There has been a wide diversity of nationalities in both events held so far, including applicants from all continents except Africa, for now. The most represented nations were France, Italy, the UK, and Spain. How badly have you been affected by COVID-19? Have you adjusted dates, rules, regulations, repertoire? The impossibility for some, and uncertainty for others, to travel, as well as the availability of corporate sponsorship during the pandemic have led us to postpone the event to late 2021 or, if the situation doesn’t improve soon, to as late as Spring 2022. Repertoire and regulations will remain unchanged for now. Possibly, if the event will shift to 2022, the age limit will exceptionally be raised by one year, to allow participation to competitors who turn 35, the current age limit, in 2021, and who would be excluded due to the event being postponed.

DEBUT International Classical Singing Competition

Tell us a little about your competition and what makes it special. In 2020, DEBUT celebrates its tenth competition, held at the great setting of Weikersheim Castle and TauberPhilharmonie. Würzburg Philharmonic Orchestra is providing accompaniment for the competitors. DEBUT is open to soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, countertenor, baritone and bass singers. A particular focus this year was on Lieder as a separate art form. They are considered an integral element of sustainable training in classical singing, and thus DEBUT offers two special Lieder prizes. Which countries are most strongly represented among your competitors? Usually, we see competitors from all over the world. This year less so, as people from Australia, Russia and from the USA could not travel. But most of our competitors live in Europe. How badly have you been affected by COVID-19? Have you adjusted dates, rules, regulations, repertoire?

We had to change repertoire to adjust to a smaller orchestra size; we only invited an audience of 220 people instead of the usual 600; and we asked everyone to wear a mask. But we are very happy that the competition took place. I think we were the only vocal competition which took place during this time.

introducing: Henryk Martenka Director, International Paderewski Piano Competition, Bydgoszcz, Poland Host of the 2022 WFIMC General Assembly The Paderewski Competition is highly respected around the world. Tell us a little about your competition’s history and what makes it special. Held under the Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, the International Paderewski Piano Competition is organized by the Paderewski Music Association in Bydgoszcz since 1961. Since 1998 it has been held every three years, enjoying a growing international recognition. It honours Ignacy Jan Paderewski – a great Polish pianist, composer and politician. He was the musical icon of his times, very well known in Europe, South America and the United States. How do you pay hommage to your namesake pianist Paderewski? To honour Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the Paderewski Music Association has made performances of Paderewski’s music mandatory. But there is also the Paderewski Piano Academy; masterclasses with Symphony Orchestra named after Paderewski; and there are recitals offering music by Paderewski. And overseas, we enjoy working with the Japan Paderewski Association and the Paderewski Society in Los Angeles, both associations initiated by the competition. You offer preliminary auditions for your competition in 8 cities around the world. Tell us more about how the preliminaries are organized! To enable pianists from around the world to participate in the International Paderewski Piano Competition, we organize auditions in eight cities: Vienna, New York, Moscow, Warsaw, Brescia, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul. Our main partners are Yamaha Music Inc., the National Frederic Chopin Institute, and Talent Music Master Courses in Brescia, who help us organizing auditions in these cities. The Preliminaries are judged by one Polish Juror of the Paderewski Piano Competition, one foreign Juror of the PPC, and one local professor from the country where the preselection takes place. That way many young and aspiring pianists get the opportunity to participate in auditions in or near their hometown, free of travel expenses.

The 2022 GA of WFIMC will be held in Bydgoszcz – can you tell us a little about your city and what the visitor can expect? Founded in 1038 Bydgoszcz is an academic, scientific and cultural center with a population of 350.000. The city’s fifteen Universities count around 35.000 Students. Situated at the Brda River, Bydgoszcz boosts 21 bridges and one of the largest Forest Parks in Poland. While Bydgoszcz is an industrial city, music has always played an important role in the lifes of our citizens, and Bydgoszcz is about to apply as a UNESCO Creative City of Music. But even now, the city is often called “City of Music” because of the many musical institutions such as the Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic, the Opera Nova, The Nowowiejski Music Academy, the Arthur Rubinstein Music School, and the Paderewski Music Association (est. 1922), to name just a few. In 2022, many of these institutions will be on display when Bydgoszcz will host the General Assembly of the WFIMC.
